Nuovo album per i Crystal Eyes, formazione svedese che da un po’ di anni a questa parte, ci delizia con album pwer heavy forse non originalissimi, ma densi di ottime melodie e supportati sempre da vincenti trame corali. Cosi’, anche il nuovo “Chained”, si candida come uno dei lavori più melodici della formazione scandinava, a partire dalla scanzonata “Ride The Rainbow”, posta in apertura e graziata da un bel coro melodico e di facile presa, cosi’ come la successiva e più marziale “The Fire Of Hades”, sigillata da un coro da “stadio” in pieno stile Hammerfall e con il bravo vocalist Nico Adamsen, su tonalità davvero notevoli. Tempi hard rock per “The Devil Inside”, dove i Crystal Eyes si avvicinano a certe cose dei vecchi Dokken o degli Stryper più tirati, mentre “Waves Of War” si lancia in una cavalcata piratesca figlia illegittima dei Running Wild di “Death Or Glorry” o “Pile Of Skulls”, con risultati esaltanti e un coro speed power di grande impatto e bellezza. Un futuro classico in sede live. Delicata e di tratti da power ballad “Dying In The Rain” davvero coinvolgente e suonata con un piglio niente male, per regalare emozioni anche a chi non viaggia su coordinate propriamente power; heavy rock d’alta scuola con “Fighting”, rocciosa heavy track dal coro immediato e potentissimo in sede live. Mancano all’appello “Shadow Rider”, (molto Iron Maiden) “Lonely Ball Of Fate” e la medievale ballad finale “Guardian”, che sigillano un ritorno convincente e azzaccatissimo per i Crystal Eyes. Bentornati ragazzi..vi aspettiamo sui palchi italiani! MOMENTO D’ESTASI: senza dubbio la molto Running Wild “Waves Of War” e la hard rock”The Fire Of Hades” senza tralasciare l’epica e conclusiva “Guardian”. COLPO DI SONNO: nessuno. Borås mest ihärdiga och konsekventa metallmusiker är utan tvekan gitarristen Mikael Dahl. Han har varit sitt koncept och band trogen sedan 1992 och aldrig väjt för att gå den långa vägen i sin strävan att upprätthålla Crystal Eyes. På album nummer sex hör vi renodlad heavy metal såsom den såddes i Tyskland under 1980-talet. På checklistan hittar vi således band som Accept och Helloween, mest med avseende på riff och melodier, men även i de direkta och skanderande refrängerna. En del influenser från brittiska metalltitaner som Iron Maiden framträder också i vissa av melodislingorna. Dahls produktion är utmärkt; balansen mellan de ettriga, bitande spåren och tyngre partier är välavvägd, och inslagen av akustisk gitarr och keyboards gör ljudbilden mer nyanserad. Dessutom har Crystal Eyes den goda smaken att jobba med dubbla bastrummor på ett sätt som förstärker intensiteten i låten istället för att göra det till ett fundament i musiken. Den kraftfulla akustiska finalen ”Guardian”, vilken för övrigt sjungs av Dahl (övrig sång tar nyanlände dansken Nico Adamsen förnämligt hand om), stämningsfullt uppbackad av en klassisk Accept-kör, hör till de mest angenäma överraskningarna på plattan. Men kvalitén på låtarna är genomgående god, på den första halvan av skivan rentav riktigt stark, och jag kan utan förbehåll rekommendera den till alla anhängare av melodiös åttiotalsmetall. Låt vara att influenserna ibland lyser igenom väl starkt, men ändå anser jag detta vara långt charmigare än Hammerfall. BY: Jukka Paananen

Dire qu'il y a des types bien qui s'arrachent depuis 1992 sans réussir à se faire un nom... Ou bien la vie est mal faite (mais ça, on le savait déjà...), ou bien ça se bouscule au portillon ! Ou bien, les deux... Le fait est qu'en matière de power-métal, "Crystal Eyes" n'est pas seul sur le marché et son style ne brille pas par excès d'originalité mais la qualité de ce 6° album mérite assurément mieux qu'un entrefilet dans les revues spécialisées ! Alors, ne laissons à personne d'autre le soin de vous inciter à découvrir un groupe Suèdois inconnu qui sévit dans la jungle métallique à mi-chemin entre Iron Maiden et Blind Guardian ! Suivez le guide : même si les 9 tîtres participent à l'unité de l'album, permettez-moi de vous conseiller d'attaquer par "The fire of hades" histoire de vous imprégner de leur manière bien à eux de concevoir le power : mélodique, riche et bien maîtrisé ! Faites ensuite un détour par "Waves of war" pour vous convaincre que la puissance ne leur fait pas défaut (la section rythmique est assurée par Stefan Svantesson à la batterie et Claes Wikander à la basse), pas plus d'ailleurs que les refrains hyper-mémorisables (Nico Adamsen chante un peu comme Kaï Hansen et les choeurs nous rappellent assurément la veine teutonne...).Enfin, pour vous prouver si le besoin s'en faisait encore sentir, que l'on a pas affaire à un bloc monolythique de morceaux modélisés, enchaînez l'écoute de "Shadow rider" et "Lonely ball of fate" : le charme gagne, non ? Vous êtes maintenant murs pour reprendre l'album au 1° morceau et vous laisser bercer... Bilan : je ne peux nier qu'il n'y a là rien de vraiment original, que les guitaristes pêchent un peu par défaut : les soli de Mickael Dahl et Paul Pettersson laissent parfois sur leur faim mais je passe un bien bon moment chaque fois que je glisse ce CD dans mon lecteur peut-être parce que je suis encore accro au métal des eighties : que voulez-vous, on ne se refait pas ! Crystal Eyes dürften hierzulande dem Ein oder Anderen bereits ein Begriff sein, da sie Mitte der Neunziger Jahre bereits für Blind Guardian als Opener ans Werk durften. Ich muss allerdings gestehen, dass mir die Schweden bislang gänzlich unbekannt waren. Und das, obwohl die aktuelle Veröffentlichung „Chained“ bereits die sechste der Melodic Metal-Band ist, die sich dem Stil der 80er verschrieben hat und dementsprechend Maiden, Priest, Black Sabbath und Accept als Referenzen heranziehen. Naja, den Black Sabbath-Querverweis kann ich nicht ganz nachvollziehen, aber ansonsten stimmt die Richtung schon. Natürlich könnte man hier auch andere Bands aufzählen wie z.B. Hammerfall oder Blind Guardian. Zwar verfügen „Crystal Eyes“ nicht über den Bombast von Blind Guardian, aber insbesondere die mit Akustik-Gitarren vorgetragene Ballade „Guardian“ erinnert nicht nur namentlich an die Krefelder. Besonders gut gefällt mir auch Neuzugang und Sänger Nico Adamsen, dessen Stimme sich gut in den Sound einfügt. Mal abgesehen von dem oben erwähnten „Guardian“ hat die Band einige flotte Tracks im Köcher („Ride The Rainbow“, „Fighting“), kann aber auch deutlich gebremster agieren („The Fire Of Hades“). Die Songs machen Spaß und sind kurzweilig. Allerdings hört „Chained“ irgendwie mittendrin auf. Schuld daran ist ein schlechtes Händchen bei Reihenfolge der Tracks. Aus meiner Sicht ist es nämlich ziemlich ungeschickt, den Silberling ausgerechnet mit „Guardian“ – dem mit Abstand ruhigsten Track des Albums – enden zu lassen. Dadurch hat man eher den Eindruck, versehentlich auf die Eject-Taste gedrückt und hierdurch den Durchlauf vorzeitig beendet zu haben. Hier wäre eine andere Reihenfolge oder besser noch: ein oder zwei flottere Tracks nach „Guardian“ wünschenswert gewesen, zumal für Letzteres in Anbetracht der knapp 40-minütigen Spielzeit noch reichlich Platz vorhanden wäre. Schade eigentlich, denn das Songmaterial als solches ist ausgesprochen gut. Daher kann man trotz dieses kleinen Schönheitsfehlers unterm Strich von einem gelungenen Album sprechen. Crystal Eyes haben das Rad zwar nicht neu erfunden, aber das, was sie hier auffahren, hat Hand und Fuß. Freunde oben genannter Bands sollten „Chained“ daher mal antesten. BY: Jürgen Kowanda

Für alle Fans von HAMMERFALL und BLIND GUARDIAN hat Schweden im November einen frischen Export zu bieten, der das Rad zwar nicht neu erfindet, aber definitiv hörbar ist und alle wichtigen Qualitäten des Power Metal aufweist: CRYSTAL EYES mit ihrem neuen Album "Chained". Obwohl die Gruppe nun schon seit 1992 existiert, sechs Alben herausgebracht hat und auch hierzulande (zum Beispiel im Vorprogramm von BLIND GUARDIAN) schon eine Menge Auftritte aufweisen kann, blieb ihnen der große Durchbruch bisher versagt. Ob sie dieses mit ihrem neuen Album ändern können, steht in den Sternen. Schon bei den ersten Tönen des Albums werden sofort Erinnerungen an große Melodic Metal Scheiben der 80er wach, Anhänger der anfangs genannten Bands fühlen sich sofort heimisch. Die Gitarren werden sauber gespielt, die Melodien sind ohne Frage extrem eingängig und die Refrains haben durchaus Ohrwurmcharakter. Die Texte sind einfach und einprägsam, was allerdings nicht nur positiv ist, etwas mehr Abwechslung hätte vielleicht gut getan. Der Gesang von Band-Neuzugang Nico Adamsen liegt irgendwo zwischen Hansi Kürsch und Joacim Cans, was hervorragend zur Musik passt und bei mir so manche Gänsehaut hervorrief. "Chained" bietet sowohl Songs, die deutlich machen, wofür das "Power" vor dem "Metal" steht, als auch ruhige Passagen und mit dem letzten Track sogar eine Ballade, die wiederum stark an BLIND GUARDIAN erinnert. Insgesamt hat das Album keine wirklichen Schwächen, alle Songs sind von hoher Qualität und überzeugen den Hörer, wirklich überragend ist aber keiner der Tracks. Auch mit diesem Album schaffen es CRYSTAL EYES nicht, das gewisse "Extra" zu vermitteln, das die wahren Größen des Power Metals so unvergleichlich macht, es fehlt einfach ein Element dass die Gruppe einzigartig macht und vom Mittelmaß abhebt. Für die ansonsten aber einwandfreie Produktion gibt es 7 von 10 Punkten, als Anspieltipps würde ich 'Ride The Rainbow' und 'The Devil Inside' empfehlen. BY: Matthias Brands

It takes a few tracks to really get into its true vibe, but when it finally hits you know what you are in for. “Waves of War” is just meant for the live festival circuit. Hordes of drunken festival goers shaking their fists and flying there jolly rogers in unison. It smacks of Helloween during Mike Kiske’s tenure and that is no bad thing. Mock as much as you want, but the minute this CD is over you will hear this song in you head… it's just disgustingly catchy. And then they even go for a song that would cause Blackmore’s Night fans to go all wobbly at the knees. Acoustic guitars and mystical lyrics are all there but never so much that they are lame. You can just imagine the track being written while the band was pissed off their gord with an acoustic guitar in hand. It has that role-playing/massively online role-player game quality to it. All in all quite an enjoyable album that you will find yourself liking despite some instincts not to. A decent release from a band that clearly know a thing or two about writing a cracking song. CRYSTAL EYES erblickten das Licht der Musikwelt im Jahr 1992, aber es sollte noch sechs Jahre dauern, bis die Band mit ihrem Debüt-Album „World Of Black And Silver" das erste mal von sich Reden machte. Das deutsche Label, bei dem sie dafür unter gekommen waren, veröffentlichte auch noch zwei Jahre später das zweite Album der Band. Die Zusammenarbeit wurde aber wegen erheblicher Differenzen anschließend beendet, und das dritte Album wurde über das schwedische Label Heavy Fidelity veröffentlicht. Neben den Wechseln der Plattenfirmen kam es auch immer wieder zu Änderungen im Line Up, was die Band aber nicht davon abhielt, konsequent ihren Weg weiter zu gehen. Mit Sänger Nico Adamsen, dem einzigen verbliebenen Gründungsmitglied und Gitarrist Mikael Dahl, Bassist Claes Wikander, Drummer Stefan Svantesson und dem zweiten Gitarristen Paul Pettersson hat sich jetzt aber das Line Up stabilisiert, und für das nunmehr sechste Album „Chained" wurden neun Melodic Metal Tracks geschrieben und eingespielt. Dabei gehen die Schweden sehr traditionell zur Werke, mischen ihren Sound aus einer Brise HAMMERFALL („The Devil Inside", „Shadow Rider"), ein wenig RUNNING WILD („Waves Of War") und zwei Stückchen FREDOM CALL („Ride The Rainbow", „Lonely Ball Of Fate") zusammen, bleiben aber stets soweit unter der Grenze und packen immer noch genug von ihren eigen Trademarks dazu, um nicht als Plagiat abgestempelt zu werden. Trotz all dieser Querverweise ist „Chained" ein richtiges Pfund geworden, das neben dem traditionellen Metal im modernen Gewand besonders durch die druckvolle Produktion zu gefallen weiß. Wer so an Traditionen hängt, darf auch mit der obligatorischen Power Ballade um die Ecke kommen, was CRYSTAL EYES mit „Dying In The Rain" auch sehr anspruchsvoll tun. Der akustische Rausschmeißer „Guardian" erinnert mich dann doch etwas zu sehr an BLIND GUARDIAN, wodurch dieser Song auch bei mir durchs Raster fällt. Fazit: CRYSTAL EYES machen mit „Chained" keinen Hehl daraus, von welchen Bands sie beeinflusst wurden, bewegen sich aber immer noch gerade so im Rahmen des Erlaubten. Außer bei „Waves Of War", bei dem mir etwas zuviel RUNNING WILD zu hören ist, und dass bezieht sich nicht nur auf das immer wieder im Text vorkommende „Jolly Roger", haben die Schweden ein fettes Stück Stahl geschmiedet, dass bei den Fans der bereits erwähnten Bands, aber auch bei allen anderen Metal Fans mit Sicherheit gut ankommen wird. Eine faustdicke Überraschung im Bereich des melodiösen Heavy Metal kommt in diesem Jahr aus Schweden: während von den Blind Guardians, Manowars und Hammerfalls dieser Welt in der letzten Zeit nicht viel Neues zu hören war (und wenn dann, nicht nur positives), legen Crystal Eyes ihr fünftes Album vor, das zumindest die letzten beiden Hammerfall-Studio-Alben locker übertrumpft. Denn „Chained“ bietet nicht weniger, als neun beinahe perfekte Melodic-Metal-Hymnen. Zugegeben: objektiv betrachtet hat man all das schon einmal gehört. Vom Hymnenhaften Opener „Ride The Rainbow“, dem Hardrock-lastigen „The Devil Inside“, dem Double-Bass-Nackenbrecher „Waves Of War“, bis hin zur obligatorischen Ballade „Guardian“ bekommt der Fan ein Melodic-Metal-Album wie aus dem Lehrbuch. Innovation oder besonders individueller Kang? Keine Spur. Brauchen Crystal Eyes aber auch nicht, denn die neun Nummern auf „Chained“ machen schlicht und ergreifend Spaß. Da kann sich so manche 80er-Metal-Revival—Band getrost eine Scheibe abschneiden. Ein Wunder also fast, dass die Band um neu-Sänger Nico Adamsen hierzulange noch nicht auf deutlich größere Resonanz gestoßen ist. Denn sowohl die typisch-knallige Produktion, als auch die musikalische Leistung der Bandmitglieder geht mehr als in Ordnung. Adamsen selbst klingt etwas wie eine Mischung aus Joacim Cans (Hammerfall) und Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian - fast schon unheimlich bei „Fighting“), während die Saitenfraktion mit Mikael Dahl und Paul Pettersson an den Äxten ein Helloween-frickel-Solo nach dem anderen vom Stapel lässt. „Chained“ bietet also neun Hymnen, wie sie gleichzeitig stereotyper und andererseits perfekter kaum sein könnten. Die musikalische Untermalung für die nächste 80er-Rock-Party ist definitiv gesichert. BY: Felix Liedel

Wow man, ya know, it’s been since 2005’s Confessions Of The Maker (a review for which was posted in May of that year)that I’d been in contact with this Swedish Heavy Metal band, as for some dark reason their Benelux distributor suddenly scrapped us from their correspondence list! A lot has happened with the band since! For starters, the album’s singer Daniel Heiman (ex-Lost Horizon) was only hired for those recordings, so the band still had to go in search for a frontman to replace founding member Mikael Dahl (whom had decided to step back to concentrate on his guitar play) as singer. The band found their new singer...through an Internet audition call...in Dane Sören Nico Adamsen (prefers to be called by his middle name) of the band Starrats (with whom he had already released an album), who won said the competition with his “cool mix of Rob Halford and Dio” singing style. Then, at the start of the recording process of the band’s 2006 (released Nov. 3) album Dead City Dreaming (the mixing of which would be done by an outsider for the first time in the band’s history...but by none less than the revered Fedrik Nordström), guitarist Jonathan Nyberg decided to quit with the band, as he felt that combining it with a full-time job and a growing family, his engagement in Crystal Eyes had only suffered. As a farewell gesture, he still did one solo on the album, but otherwize all guitar play on that album was done by Mikael alone! A replacement on the second guitar was swiftly found in Niclas Karlsson, whom had been a co-founder of the band back in 1992! Following a short break in 1995, Niclas had quit the band to form Fierce Conviction (soon renamed to just Conviction) and release two albums. He then appeared on one Zonata album, and continued to play short stints with Fraternia and Rising Faith. For some time before re-joining his old band, he and Mikael had been playing together in the Judas Priest tribute band Defenders Of The Faith...so he was close at hand when Mikael needed him to fill the shoes of Nyberg! May 2007 brought two very different announcements. Mikael first let it be known that he had already finished 7 new songs for an upcoming album, and had 8 more in progress...and then a couple of days later Niclas had asked to be releaved from his duties to the band. He’d lost his inspiration to play guitar and rehearse, and felt it wasn’t fair for him to stay on. So, the message announcing his departure at the same time became a call out for a new axeman, preferably one who’d be able to come to rehearsals frequently enough, ànd one who’d respect the twin guitar tradition of the band. On September 1 the band let it be known that their search for a new guitarist was over when they’d found one Paul Pettersson, who lives within walking distance from the band’s studio. As a matter of fact they’d known him for a long time already, as he’d played with friends of the band, even ex-Crystal Eyes members! Time to work in the new man in some of the old material, and of course also the new stuff...get his imput, so to say! Then, on a mutual agreement, the band and their former label decided to part ways! Which meant Crystal Eyes had to go through the process of recording a demo and send it around to appropriate labels. After all offers came in, the band decided to siign onto the Metal Heaven roster, because they gave the band an overall positive feeling during negociations...could apparently also convince the band of interesting times ahead! Well, when listening to the 9 tracks (which nevertheless last a good 42 ½ minutes) on the new album, I have to say everything comes over quite convincing. Adamsen (whom I’m personally hearing for the first time) is a true vocal wizard, and the above description of his voice is really spot-on...with the difference that he excells the sum of the two references gloriously! The new axeman is definitely an asset as well, and he and Dahl almost seem like an extention of each other. Overall, the pace of the songs is quite speedy, but there’s a couple of exceptions when the boys (oh, time to mention that the line-up is rounded with bassist Claus Wikander and drummer Stefan Svantesson) take back on the speed somewhat. “The Fire Of Hades” has a calmer pace overall, and a keyboard-driven passage towards the end; while “Dying In The Rain” has calmer vocal work, it is still a Heavy song, and acoustic ballad “Guardian” – also the album closer – is calmer by definition (also contains some truely passionate singing by Mikael Dahl as lead singer)! The sound is great, as always when Fredrik Nordström does your mixing! For your listening pleasures, the band has posted no less than 4 songs off the album at myspace.com/crystaleyesfromsweden, so check ‘em out! Darn, this album really comes out in the wrong season, because this is just the kind of thing I would give listening sessions while sitting on the porch on a hot Summer’s evening with a nice cold longdrink close at hand! Any band hailing from Sweden and playing any form of heavy, melodic, power or progressive metal should immediately put a bulls eye on the back of their denim jackets because the music critics are gunning for you. It comes with the territory these days. Thankfully, for this music reviewer, this is my first experience with the melodic heavy metal band Crystal Eyes. I have no preconceived opinions about them. However, I do know that as much as they have been appreciated over six albums, they definitely have their multitude of detractors. I'm not one of them. I liked 'Chained.' It's hardly perfect, but it is definitely vibrant and entertaining melodic metal. From start to finish 'Chained' has a steady and bright, though sometimes predictable, melodic metal pace. The hallmarks of this recording are two-fold. First, Nico Adamsen's vocals are purely remarkable: steady, strong and versatile. He has definitely found his calling. Take note of his work on 'Waves Of War,' 'Shadow Rider' and 'The Fire Of Hades.' Secondly, following the first point, the vocal arrangements are thoroughly captivating as on 'Dying In The Rain' and the aforementioned 'Waves Of War.' Kudos should also go to a very agile rhythm section and, where given the opportunity to shine, the crisp guitar work. 'Shadow Rider,' 'Waves Of War' and 'Lonely Ball Of Fate' are quite exemplary and thrilling. With this said, of greater importance, and what's more impressive, is how well this unit performs together. Crystal Eyes is truly a case where the sum has become greater than the individual parts, a very good thing. The only flaw that I could find was in the lyrical content (though I often don't listen that carefully to the words). Songs like 'The Devil Inside' and 'Lonely Ball Of Fate,' though impressive melodic heavy metal, had innocuous and shallow lyrics. For all these reasons, I found Crystal Eyes' 'Chained' a delightful and entertaining dose of pure melodic heavy metal. And for the same reasons, I'm sure their critics will plow them under. The sixth album by the swedish band crystal eyes is very pleasing to hear.This is my first review of this band so i cant say how this record stands against earlier albums, but this album is loaded with great catchy melodies in the vein of Hammerfall/Judas priest/Nocturnal rites/Gamma ray and eighties metalstyle.Great vocals and great musical ork .Nothing to complain about. Stand out tracks : "The fire of hades" , "Waves of war","Ride the rainbow","Lonely ball of fate" Recomended if you like melodic powermetal BY:

Chained is the sixth album of the Swedish band Crystal Eyes. In comparison with the previous album, Chained is a bit less commercial. That is, the songs haven’t such a high sing-along level. Nevertheless the songs sound rather familiar already the first time the album is played. Chained is influenced by bands as Gamma Ray (in the early period) and Rhapsody. Don’t expect any new ideas or anything new at all, the songs are quite predictable but melodic metal fans will like the album. The songs vary from up tempo to slow tempo. Cristal Eyes surely plays the songs with a lot of enthusiasm. The vocals (Nico Adamsen) are great, he has huge power but he still stays melodic; the influences of Niclas Karlsson (he joined the band just before the release of Dead City Dreaming) are audible, the solos are full of energy. Ride The Rainbow is an up tempo song with choruses of a high sing along fineness, the song is influenced by Gamma Ray in the early period. The heavy The Fire Of Hades shows the other side of Crystal Eyes. Rather slow tempo with heavy riffs and still melodic. Waves Of War has the typical Rhapsody elements, fast melodic riffs, double bass and melodic sing along choruses with a great and fast solo. Shadow Rider has twin guitar riffs. The last Guardian is a baroque and slow tempo Rhapsody song. Although Chained isn’t innovative, melodic metal fans will enjoy the album. That’s for sure! BY: ProgRalph

I Crystal Eyes non sono troppo noti qui da noi, ma nella natia Svezia hanno già pubblicato cinque album prima che la Metal Heaven si accorgesse di loro. “Chained” è appunto la sesta produzione, ed ha buoni numeri per attrarre qualche fan anche dalle nostre parti. L’iniziale “Ride the Rainbow” ci offre un sound pomposo, sospeso fra power e melodic metal: il coro finale rovina un po’ una canzone di buona fattura. “The Devil inside” è invece un brano 100% hard rock, energico e altisonante: come si evince anche da “Waves of War”, la caratteristica principale della musica dei Crystal Eyes (che fra l’altro vantano in organico due membri degli interessanti Freternia) sono le melodie aperte, in qualche punto vicine perfino all’happy metal, evidenziate al meglio dalle trame di chitarra e dalla voce squillante di Nico Adamsen. Un altro bell’episodio di hard rock grintoso è pure “Fighting”, mentre la conclusione è affidata all’ispirata acustica di “Guardian”. Fateci un pensiero. BY: Renato de Filippis

Era ora che una band puntuale, affidabile ed ottima come i Crystal Eyes fosse finalmente valorizzata e messa sotto contratto da una label ben distribuita e reperibile come la Metal Heaven, dopo qualche album praticamente autoprodotto con la Heavy Fidelity, irrintracciabile qui da noi in Italia: fortunatamente il loro precedente album del 2006 intitolato “Dead City Dreaming” deve essere andato molto bene, anche perchè veramente stupendo, e quindi ecco che troviamo Mikael Dahl e soci alle prese con "Chained". La band è rimasta quasi completamente la stessa, ad eccezione dell'ennesima dipartita del chitarrista fondatore Niclas Karlsson (già con Zonata e Freternia), rimpiazzato ottimamente da Paul Petterson, perfettamente a proprio agio sin dal proprio debutto anche grazie all'esperienza ed alla maturità conseguita anche grazie ai suoi 41 anni di età: l'asse portante della band, ovvero Dahl e l'ottimo Soren Nico Adamsen alla voce, è inalterato e questo non può che essere sinonimo di qualità. Fin dalle prime note dell'opener "Ride the Rainbow" i Crystal Eyes mettono subito le cose in chiaro, grazie al loro metal fatto di una perfetta miscela di power e classic, di potenza e melodia, di riffs canonici ed assoli taglienti...e dopo soli 3 minuti ci troviamo già a scapocciare pesantemente ed a fare air-guitar come degli ossessi! Musica semplice, dannatamente coinvolgente, di facile presa ma allo stesso tempo così duratura nel tempo, tanto che il precedente “Dead City Dreaming” non ha attraversato momenti di pausa o accantonamento durante questi due anni di pausa. Come allora, anche il nuovo lavoro gode dell'eccezionale lavoro di Fredrik Nordström nei suoi Studio Fredman e come ovvio il sound è PERFETTO, lo stato dell'arte per un disco con queste sonorità. Come ama ripetere Mikael stesso, per immaginare i Crystal Eyes bisogna pensare al 1984, ai Judas Priest, agli Iron Maiden, agli Accept, a Ronnie James Dio ed ai Manowar; non gli si può certo dare torto, e senza scomodare i capolavori che questi signori hanno inciso decine di anni fa, non è scandaloso dire che gli ultimi 2 o 3 album dei Crystal Eyes siano di gran lunga superiori agli ultimi, deludentissimi album di queste bands. "Dying in the Rain" e "The Fire of Hades" mettono i brividi per quanto sono intense ed epiche (e qui il paragone con i primissimi Manowar calza davvero a pennello), mentre anche le più classiche e rockeggianti "The Devil Inside" e "Fighting" convincono appieno fin dal primo ascolto. E' noto che in ogni disco i Crystal Eyes diano il meglio di loro sul finire dei loro lavori ed infatti con "Shadow Rider" si entra nella piena esaltazione, con un brano che più maideniano non si può...anzi si può con la successiva "Lonely Ball of Fate", ottime melodie, chorus troppo catchy e memorizzabile, mai banale, veramente trascinante ed azzeccata, come gli succede da diversi anni a questa parte! Chiude "Guardian", un delicato arpeggio acustico molto a-là Blind Guardian, che se fosse inciso oggi dalla band di Krefeld sarebbe incensato ed osannato per decenni a venire...speriamo che qualcuno si accorga dei Crystal Eyes, un gruppo oggi maturo e davvero di gran lunga superiore a moltissime formazioni decisamente sopravvalutate che hanno smesso di produrre dischi all'altezza anni ed anni fa. Complimentissimi a Mikael Dahl e compagni per un nuovo episodio della loro carriera che ci terrà compagnia per lungo, lunghissimo tempo. BY: Gianluca 'Graz' Grazioli

Crystal Eyes aus Schweden können mittlerweile auch schon auf eine langjährige Karriere, welche von zahlreichen Line Up-Wechseln begleitet wurde (vor allem der Sängerposten war immer wieder betroffen) zurückblicken. Gegründet vor 16 Jahren bringen Crystal Eyes mit „Chained“ ihr mittlerweile sechstes Album an den Start. Einen grösseren Bekanntheitsgrad haben die Schweden trotzdem noch nicht erreicht und ehrlich gesagt glaube ich nicht, dass dies mit dem neuen Album gelingen wird. Schlecht sind Crystal Eyes zwar beileibe nicht, aber dennoch fehlt mir bei ihrem aktuellen Werk (wie übrigens auch bei den mir bekannten Vorgängerscheiben) irgendwie das gewisse Etwas, welches die Band aus der Masse heraushebt. Dabei kann ich nicht mal genau erklären, was es ist, denn spielerisch ist alles im grünen Bereich, die Produktion kommt druckvoll und die Songs sind eingängig, haben Power und bleiben schnell mal im Ohr hängen. Mangelnde Eigenständigkeit vielleicht? Klar, das Opening Doppel „Ride the Rainbow“ und „The Fire of Hades“ könnte genauso gut auf einer beliebigen Hammerfall-Scheibe stehen, das fröhliche „Waves of War“ erinnert mich in der Strophe massiv an Running Wild, bei der Halbballade „Dying in the Rain“ kommt wieder der Hammerfall-Vergleich zum Zug, bei dem stampfenden „Shadow Rider“ lugt Dio um die Ecke und die abschliessende Akustik-Ballade „Guardian“ schreit förmlich nach – der Titel sagt ja alles – Blind Guardian. Nun klauen zwar auch andere Bands wie die Raben und schaffen es trotzdem, bei den Fans offene Türen einzurennen. Das alleine kann also nicht das Problem sein. Vielleicht ist es schlicht und einfach auch das Songwriting, welches mich trotz aller musikalischen Qualitäten nicht richtig mitreisst. „Chained“ ist eines jener Alben, welches jeder True-Metal-Fan blind kaufen kann ohne damit einen Fehlkauf zu machen, die Scheibe ein paar Mal hören kann und für ganz gut befinden wird und schliesslich trotzdem – wenn einmal im Regal verstaut – kaum wieder hervorholen wird. I Borås bor en musiker och gitarrist som heter Mikael Dahl. Han är en rätt tålmodig sådan som envist fört sitt band, CRYSTAL EYES, närmare och närmare en större publik. Bandet bildades redan 1992 och nya albumet, ”Chained” är deras sjätte sedan debuten, ”World of black and silver”, släpptes 1998. Detta är också andra plattan med senaste tillskottet, den danske sångaren Nico Adamsen, som blev likt en injektionsspruta för bandet i och med förra plattan, ”Dead city dreaming”. CRYSTAL EYES sound och ljudbild blev tajtare och bättre i och med det danska tillskottet. Nya albumet är också början på ett samarbete med den tyska labeln Metal Heaven och bara det brukar innebära att man får fler ögon på sig. Jag har aldrig tagit chansen att se bandet live, trots att jag varit på Sweden Rock de två år de spelat där, men de lär vara ett riktigt bra liveband. På skiva har det varit en lång resa innan de hittat rätt i kontrollrummet. Det började lika något med förra plattan och nya albumet är bandets bästa hittills. CRYSTAL EYES spelar musik som de själva är uppväxta till och tar metaltraditionen vidare i spåren efter Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Dio och även tyska band som Scorpions, Accept, Fair Warning och MSG. Det är välspelat och gitarristerna Mikael Dahl och Paul Pettersson lirar med en självsäkerhet som bara ett band som spelat ihop i över femton år kan ha. Och nye sångaren är ett fynd och ett helt rätt val för bandet efter att tidigare haft en handfull olika sångare som passerat förbi. Den musik som CRYSTAL EYES kreerar är långt ifrån nyskapande, men vem vill ha nyskapande klassisk metal egentligen? Till och med titlarna har igenkänningsfaktor. Musik mår inte alltid bra av att vändas och vridas på och detta svenska band är ett exempel på att det fortfarande går att skriva musik i redan upplöjda fåror. Vi kan ackordrundorna och gitarr riffen låter ofta bekanta, men vad gör väl det när melodierna är så starka och lättheadbangade som i CRYSTAL EYES fall. Från ”Ride the rainbow” till avslutande ”Guardian” kommer jag på mig själv att sitta och hålla takten på något vis och det om något är ett täcken på att musiken är bra. I ”Guardian” sitter jag i och för sig mer och vaggar fram och tillbaka till en vacker ballad som endast har akustisk gitarr som ackompanjemang. Jag har hört det förut men jag vill höra det igen i CRYSTAL EYES tappning och önskar detta seglivade band all lycka med nya plattan och uppmanar alla metalheads att spana in den här plattan pronto! The band Crystal Eyes was founded in Sweden 16 years ago. After al these years there's only one original member left because of big line up changes: guitar player Mikael Dahl. The band plays power metal which reminds me of bands like Gamma Ray, Judas Priest and Running Wild. Chained is the sixth album in a row of decent albums which the band released in the course of years. It's also the second album with the Dane Søren Nico Adamsen as vocalist. This man has a nice melodic voice that sounds good. He doesn't belt out high too much, which, in a way, is refreshing in a scene with lots of high wailing power metal vocalists (of which many can't do it quite right anyway). The riffs are pretty straight forward, but the (twin)solo's are done quite well. The mix is done by Fredrik Nordström and one can hear that. As always, this man has delivered great work. In spite of the number of clichés on this album, Crystal Eyes has been a decent band for years and this album doesn't change a thing about that. For power metal fans that like to headbang, this is a sure recommendation. BY: Nikky Sriamin

Swedish metal band who are new to these ears but this is their fifth album and not a bad one either! Musically they don't veer of the path of Euro power metal so its precise metal riffing, very powerful vocals courtesy of Nico Adamsen (he reminds me of Astral Doors/Wuthering Heights vocalist Nils Patrik Johansson) and big powerful melodies. 'Ride The Rainbow' gets the album underway in fine style and 'Shadow Rider' recalls Dio in their prime, a great metal anthem. The album's quiter moment 'Guardian', features acoustic guitars and gang vocals, closes the album and makes for a pleasant change in musical tempo. The rest of the album is standard power metal, not bad but nothing overly memorable. Not a bad album with good production and a good vocalist in Nico Adamsen, so if you are a power metal collector add this to your collection otherwise grab a listen first. BY: Jason Ritchie

A finales de los 90 principios de 2000, la escena metalera se inundó de grupos de power melódico que, con más o menos acierto, fueron haciéndose un hueco en el panorama musical. Una vez superado el boom, la escena se saturó y muchos de los grupos que tuvieron su momento de gloria dejaron de tener trascendencia. Algunas bandas desaparecerion, otras reciclaron su estilo y otras siguieron en sus trece. Entre esos grupos se encontraban los suecos CRYSTAL EYES, que tras un par de discos que tuvieron cierta relevancia entre los seguidores del género, una vez superada la fiebre powi, siguieron adelante contra viento y marea, editando discos con regularidad hasta llegar al 2008, año en el que los escandinavos sacan a la venta su ya sexto disco en estudio titulado "Chained". Después de editar en 2005 "Confessions Of A Maker", muchas cosas cambiaron en el seno del grupo. Por un lado la banda pasaba a formar parte del sello Metal Heaven (sello con el cual aún continúan) y por otro lado, su guitarrista Mikael Dhal abandonaba las labores vocales para centrarse en las guitarras, dando así la bienvenida a un nuevo cantante, Soren Nico Adamsen. Si bien Mikael no lo hacía nada mal y aportaba un toque de personalidad al grupo, el vocalista actual no se queda atrás ya que la voz de Soren, de tesituras muy metaleras, encaja perfectamente en el tipo de metal que practica la banda. Todo ello parece que ha llevado al grupo a vivir una especie de segunda etapa y eso se está notando en la música actual de CRYSTAL EYES. Tanto es el cambio que si esperáis encontrar aquí un disco de powi noventero, os llevaréis un chasco porque, como bien habréis podido ver, la etiqueta que le he puesto a este disco es heavy metal sin mas y no lo he puesto precisamente como estilo englobador. Desconozco qué tipo de metal practiban CRYSTAL EYES en su anterior álbum (el único de ellos que no he oído) pero este nuevo disco es simple y llanamente heavy metal y es que, con "Chained", los suecos han dejado un poco de lado el power europeo de los 90 de sus inicios y han evolucionado hacia terrenos más ochenteros, situándose a medio camino entre el heavy de toda la vida y el power metal tradicional. "Chained" es un disco equilibrado y repleto de temas con gancho y fuerza, lleno de estribillos hímnicos y de magníficos guitarrazos de sonido clásico (muy IRON MAIDEN en ocasiones). Es un LP que entra muy bien ya que su duración no supera los 45 minutos y en el que CRYSTAL EYES se acercan cada vez más a grupos como DREAM EVIL, HAMMERFALL, STORMWITCH, IRON FIRE y sobretodo y ante todo, a HEAVENS GATE. El sonido global es muy bueno y muy acorde al estilo que practican y todo el grupo está a un buen nivel, destacando dos aspectos por encima del resto. El primero es el brillante trabajo de guitarra (tanto en las rítmicas como sobretodo en los solos) y la segunda es la labor de Adamsen, cuyo registro puede llegar a recordar a genios de las cuerdas vocales como Fabio Lione, Thomas Rettke o DIO, aunque a un nivel no tan alto. En cuanto a los mejores temas del disco, los cortes rápidos y más metaleros son los que se llevan la palma. "Ride The Rainbow", la canción con la que se abre el disco, es puro heavy/power metal tradicional, con estructuras de guitarra a lo DREAM EVIL, PARAGON, PRIMAL FEAR pero con partes vocales 100% CRYSTAL EYES. Otro gran tema es sin duda "The devil Inside", un corte de heavy metal sin aditivos, de reminiscencias HAMMERFALL o HEAVENS GATE, con un gran trabajo de guitarra y con un estribillo que te invita a cantarlo a todas horas. También vale la pena destacar un gran himno como "Waves Of War", un tema de heavy/power, de guitarras muy IRON MAIDEN y con un aire a clásico de siempre que tira de espaldas. De todos modos, si tuviera que quedarme con una sola canción del disco esta sería la inspirada "Fighting", un temazo de puro heavy metal que apunta a single, en el que encontramos riffs clasiquisimos y solos espectaculares. Por desgracia "Chained" tiene un par de lunares que desmerecen el global del disco: por un lado los medios tiempos como "The Fire Of Hades" o "Dying In The Rain" son algo sosos y sin demasiado jugo y por otro lado, el tema con el que cierran el disco, "Guardian", es una balada acústica que parece puesta de relleno y sin ganas y que para más inri por el título que tiene, recuerda demasiado al "Bard Song" de BLIND GUARDIAN. Seguramente este álbum no pasará a la historia y, a estas alturas, probablemente tampoco catapultará a CRYSTAL EYES hacia el estrellato, pero sin duda los suecos han conseguido sacar un disco que está a la altura de lo esperado o que incluso puede superar las expectativas de los más escépticos ya que, con la sorpresa del cambio de estilo, podría hacer que el grupo ganara en adeptos a la causa. Otro buen disco a sumar a su infravalorada discografia. BY:

Crystal Eyes gibt es bereits seit 1992 und sie haben in der Vergangenheit auch schon einige Alben unters Volk gebracht. Ich habe zwar den Bandnamen einige Male gehört, in meine musikalische Wahrnehmung sind sie bislang aber nicht getreten. Das ändert sich nun, da ich ihr aktuelles Werk CHAINED rezensieren darf. Crystal Eyes bestehen aus Mikael Dahl (Gitarre), Paul Pettersson (Gitarre), Claes Wikander (Bass), Stefan Svantesson (Schlagzeug) und Nico Adamsen am Mikro. Der Promo-Flyer spricht von einer der heißesten Melodic-Metal-Bands Schwedens. Na, da bin ich ja mal gespannt. Der Opener "Ride the Rainbow" wird kontinuierlich aufgebaut und mündet in einen Höhenpunkt, den man bereits nach der ersten Strophe mitsingt. Das ist eingängiger Melodic Metal, wie man ihn sich wünscht. Die Rhythmustruppe hält sich dezent zurück, während die Gitarrenleads die Hookline tragen. Klasse ist auch der Gesang von Nico Adamsen, der die Töne schön lange halten kann. Mit etwas tieferem Riff und verhaltenem Rhythmus, wird bei "The Fire of Hades" erst eine düsterere Stimmung erzeugt, doch spätestens im Refrain werden uns wieder die melodischen Trademarks der Spielart präsentiert. Im weiteren Verlauf wechseln sich recht unterschiedliche Abschnitte ab. Mal wird es besinnlicher, dann druckvoll, doch die mystische Atmosphäre zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durch die Komposition. "The Devil inside" beginnt gleich sehr druckvoll. Hier darf auch der Rhythmusbereich mehr in den Vordergrund treten. Für die Hookline sind trotzdem die Gitarren zuständig. Und der energetische Gesang von Adamsen entwickelt sich während des Songs auch stückweise, um beim eingängigen Refrain zur Bestform aufzulaufen. Die ersten Takte von "Waves of War" erinnern mich stark an Stücke von Running Wild. Auch lyrisch geht es wohl um das begehrte Piraten-Thema. Insgesamt ist der Song sehr hymnisch, wobei auch weiterhin die Running-Wild-Parallelen bestehen bleiben. Doch Crystal Eyes klingen keineswegs wie eine Kopie, sondern bringen ihre eigenen Marken und Ideen in den Song ein. Da der Track richtig gut knallt, herrscht hier uneingeschränkte Headbang-Pflicht. Ein Nummer, die live wohl der Hammer schlechthin werden könnte. Bei "Dying in the Rain" wird es emotionaler. Es handelt sich um eine Ballade, die erst akustisch und dann mit E-Instrumentenbegleitung aufgebaut wird. Der Höhepunkt gehört dann der ganz gefühlvollen Seite, die Adamsen durch sein Timbre hervorragend ausdrücken kann. Im längeren Instrumentalabschnitt, wird es kurz druckvoller, dann beginnt der balladeske Aufbau erneut. Das Stück ist aber sehr gut konzipiert und driftet niemals in Kitschgefilde ab. Mit knackigem Rhythmus und dynamischen Riffs wird dem Hörer bei "Fighting" der Kopf durchgeblasen. Es handelt sich um eine recht simpel konstruierte Power-Nummer, die aber trotzdem unheimlich mitreisen kann, woran der erneut sehr hymnische Refrain nicht ganz unschuldig ist. Nur in der Mitte wird mal etwas Tempo rausgenommen, um dann aber gegen Ende hin noch druckvoller zu Werke zu gehen. "Shadow Rider" startet erst wieder emotional, doch meine Befürchtungen, dass es sich um die nächste Ballade handelt, werden bald weggeblasen. Zwar beinhaltet das Stück durchaus auch weiterhin emotionale Abschnitte, ist aber eher episch wie längere Maiden-Songs aufgebaut. Unterschiedliche Intensitäten, verschiedene Tempi und Rhythmen und ein komplexeres Konstrukt machen diesen Long-Track aus, der niemals langweilig wird. So manche Tonfolge der Leadgitarre erinnert mich aber schon stark an Iron Maiden. Mit schönen Gitarrenleads und eingängigem, zielgerichtetem Aufbau, kommt "Lonely Ball of Fate" ohne irgendwelchen Schnörkel. Es ist wieder eine Nummer bei der man je nach Gesinnung mitsingt, mitrockt oder headbangt. Im Instrumentalabschnitt laufen die Musiker zur Höchstform auf, allen voran natürlich die Gitarristen, während Nico Adamsen seine gesanglichen Künste vor allem wieder im ausdrucksstarken Refrain beweisen kann. Ich bin wieder begeistert, wie er auch hohe Töne halten kann, ohne dass man Angst vor einer Tinnitus-Attacke haben muss. Zum Abschluss kommt mit "Guardian" noch ein akustisches Stück, dass etwas folkig-nordisch anmutet. Die emotionalen Gesangspassagen - besonders die hymnischen, mehrstimmigen - lassen mir angenehme Schauer über den Rücken laufen. Schade, dass dieser vokale Genuss nur 3:47 Minuten andauert. Fazit: Bei CHAINED hatte ich seit langem mal wieder das Bedürfnis, die Höchstnote zu vergeben. Ich mache es nur deswegen nicht, weil mir 42 Minuten Spielzeit in dem Genre heutzutage etwas mager vorkommen. Kompositorisch haben Crystal Eyes hervorragende Arbeit geleistet. Jedes der neun Stücke kann ich als kleines Meisterwerk bezeichnen. Die Jungs haben sich vor allen Dingen viel Mühe gegeben, dem Hörer ein Höchstmaß an Abwechslung zu präsentieren. Das ist ihnen auch ganz klar gelungen. Obwohl sie schonmal die Grenze zum Power Metal und zum Progressive Metal (und bei "The Devil inside" auch zum Hardrock) tangieren, verlassen sie trotzdem die Wege des Melodic Metal nie richtig. Der Linie treu bleiben und dennoch solch eine Vielfalt zu servieren, ist in meinen Augen ein Beweis für ein spitzen Songwriting. Alle Musiker machen auch an ihrem Arbeitsgerät eine einwandfreie Figur. Besonders hervorzuheben ist dabei Nico Adamsens Beitrag. Seine ausdrucksstarke und emotionale Stimme in mittlerer Tonlage würde wahrscheinlich jeder Band gut zu Gesicht stehen. Ebenfalls seine Gabe, die Töne so schön zu halten. Und selbst in den hohen Lagen bleibt der Gesang unaufdringlich, was nicht vielen Shoutern gelingt. Crystal Eyes können mit CHAINED im Melodic-Metal-Sektor unheimlich Boden gut machen und sich vielleicht sogar in die Spitzengruppe spielen. Anspieltipps: Alle neun Songs spielen sich auf einem dermaßen hohen Level ab und sind in ihrer Machart trotzdem so unterschiedlich, dass ich keine speziellen Highlights herausfischen kann. Das gesamte Werk ist ein einziger Anspieltipp! Tipp: Klares "Must have" für jeden, der auch nur ansatzweise auf Melodic Metal steht. BY:

Direttamente dalla Svezia tornano i Crystal Eyes, band coerentissima dedita ad un heavy power di vecchio stampo. Il combo nordico è stato già protagonista sulle nostre pagine, e torna ad esserlo ora (anche se un po' in ritardo) con l'ultimo platter uscito a fine 2008. Durante le nove canzoni proposte assistiamo ad un vero e proprio cd manifesto dell'heavy a tinte power: sudore, sangue, birra, e fottuti riff heavy sono la magica ricetta che fanno di 'Chained' un disco per i fans del genere. La solidità del songwriting unita con le indubbie qualità dei singoli rendono questo prodotto assolutamente appetibile per chi vive di pane e heavy: insomma, chi se ne sbatte dell'originalità a tutti i costi e premia la coerenza stilistica troverà in questo 'Chained' pane per i suoi denti. La produzione è di indubbio valore e conferisce al disco quel sound un po' ruvido e selvaggio che ci vuole. Ottima anche la cover che, pur nella sua semplicità, colpisce per il suo gusto altamente retrò. In definitiva i Crystal Eyes hanno celebrato ancora una volta, con classe e gusto, la fierezza del sound heavy: se siete amanti delle sonorità fiondatevi sul myspace della band e valutate caldamente l'acquisto. Chained is already the sixth album from this Swedish band around Michael Dahl. An album loaded with classic melodic metal in the German vein. Chained brings us nothing new, but sounds inspired and true at heart. The album is filled with craftsmanship, heavy riffs, thunderous drums and pumping base providing classic eighties metal for Nico Adamsen to shine on. The Danish vocalist has a powerful and loud voice fitting the music perfectly. Choruses and choirs are inflicted by the German happy metal feeling occasionally, making it a tailor made for a handful of fans in general. Fans of acts like Accept, Blind Guardian, Brainstorm, Scanner and related bands can easily pick this one up and add it to their collection. Check out "The Fire of Hades" for instance, which will easily win you over. It is most reminiscent to Hammerfall's cocktail of classic ingredients and certainly has the same powerful production. Fans of classic and more US inflicted bands, make sure you check it out first cause it might not do the trick for you. The clichés are numerous and especially lyricwise this is a little hard to overcome. It dies out to often thanks to that (German) predictability. Crystal Eyes delivers another album pleasing fans of a specific sub-culture in metal. Certainly hailed by some, but perhaps a little to safe for most. BY: Edwin van Hoof

Chained is this reviewer's first encounter with Swedish band Crystal Eyes, even though they were formed way back in 1992 and, from the outset of this CD, it’s clear that the Scandinavian conveyor belt is continuing to churn out awesome hard rock and heavy metal bands. Take opening track Ride The Rainbow as a prime example, it's crammed full of blistering riffs backed by a chunky rhythm section, all neatly topped off with a vocal that comes straight from the Dickinson/Halford School of metal singers. It starts off like an 80’s Metallica song and the pace doesn’t let up all the way through. Founding member Mikael Dahl and his axemeister cohort Paul Pettersson blaze up and down their fretboards like men possessed. Claes Wikander on bass and drummer Stefan Svantesson lay down a solid rhythm section, and Danish singer Nico Adamsen’s vocals soar. If Manowar ever decided to do a Prog metal epic then surely Fire Of Hades wouldn’t be far off the mark as an end result. The quirky Waves Of War is like a metal sea shanty, all swashbuckling and with a big Jolly Roger chorus that’ll have you humming along. The Devil Inside and Dying In The Rain are a definite nod in the direction of Dio, and that’s no bad thing whilst Fighting has the hallmarks of early Maiden. Aside from the last track Guardian, which is more of an acoustic ballad style song, the rest of the album is dripping with great meaty dual guitars, soaring vocals and a rhythm section so solid it pummels the brain into submission. This is classic 80s style metal but with a modern feel. If you’re a 40 something like me who was around to see the rise of bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden et al, then check this out. This is Crystal Eyes’ 6th album release and if the other 5 are like this, I think I’m going to have to invest in their back catalogue. BY: Andy Lunn

Die Achtziger leben! Zumindest, was den klassischen Metal betrifft, so lange es Bands wie Crystal Eyes gibt. Denn der Sound der Schweden zeigt sich so völlig unbeeinflusst von modernen Trends und Strömungen, dass es dem Rezensenten schon fast ein Tränchen der Rührung ins faltige Gesicht treibt. Das, was die Skandinavier da auf Chained abliefern, ist nicht mal True oder Power Metal, es ist einfach nur Heavy Metal. Man hört und spürt Bands wie Black Sabbath, Dio, Judas Priest und Blind Guardian förmlich, wenn man sich mit der Musik von Crystal Eyes beschäftigt. An allen Ecken und Enden grüßen die Heroen des oben erwähnten Jahrzehnts und das klingt keineswegs altbacken oder verstaubt, sondern einfach nur klassisch gut. Kein Schmalz, keine Weichspülertendenzen, aber auch keine aufgesetzt wirkende Aggression, so sollte Heavy Metal klingen. Auch die sonst übliche, vor Schmalz strotzende "Powerballade" fehlt zum Glück, eine wahre Wohltat. Dafür gibt's schmissige Melodien, mitreißende Hooklines, abwechslungsreiche Songs und eine sich über das ganze Album erstreckende positive Stimmung. Produktion, Spielzeit und Coverartwork geben keinen Anlass zur Klage, genauso wenig wie die Performance der einzelnen Musiker. Druckvolles Bassspiel, abwechslungsreiches und gleichzeitig tightes Drumming, knackige Riffs und starke Leads, Metallerherz, was willst du mehr? Einen guten Sänger? Ja, auch den findet man hier, denn Nico Adamsen kann wirklich singen und vor allem bewegt sich seine Stimme glücklicherweise nicht in den üblichen Eierquetschbereichen, sondern er nennt eine klare und ausdrucksstarke Stimme im mittleren Tonhöhenbereich sein Eigen, die wirklich gut klingt. Natürlich gibt es auch Stellen, an denen er höher geht, aber selbst da verliert er nie die Kontrolle über sein Organ, sondern weiß mit seiner Sangeskunst auf ganzer Linie zu überzeugen. Die Songs selber sind alle recht klassisch-solide geraten, mit vielen recht gefälligen Passagen, mal melodiöser, dann wieder knackiger, mit einem Rauswerfer namens "Guardian", der seinen Namen aber so was von zu Recht trägt, denn er klingt genau so, wie Blind Guardian leider nicht mehr klingen. Tja, wieder eine Band, die mir den Glauben an den klassischen Heavy Metal zurück gibt. Es ist erfreulich, dass es solche Kapellen noch gibt, die einfach gute Musik machen und auf Modeerscheinungen einen Dreck geben. Sehr empfehlenswert! BY: Hannes

Dem modernen melodischen Metal fröhnen die Dänen "Crystal Eyes" nun schon seit 5 Alben und das merkt man ihnen auch an. Die Produktion kommt klar aus den Boxen (hätte vielleicht sogar ein wenig mehr "Dreck" verdient) und die Songs haben Wiedererkennungswert. Mit dem neuen Sänger Nico Adamsen scheinen die Jungs nun auch eine adäquate und feste Größe am Mikro gefunden zu haben, der Mann präsentiert sich nämlich in überzeugender Art und Weise auf "seinem Debüt". Crystal Eyes brauchen sich vor anderen Bands des Genres nicht verstecken und ich denke Fans des Melodic Metal werden sicher ihre Freude an "Chained" finden, denn die Langrille hat meiner Meinung nach alles was das Melodic-Metaller-Herz so braucht. Ein wenig mehr Härte in Sachen Sound hätte die Scheibe noch verdient, ansonsten Daumen hoch. BY: silentbob

There's two solutions for a post-80's melodic heavy speed band to make good quality music : The first one is to be creative and versatile to renew the style, like STEEL ATTACK, TAD MOROSE or ALKEMYST. The second is to play the best possible traditional heavy speed, like DREAM EVIL, NOCTURNAL RITES or... CRYSTAL EYES. Sixth album of the Swedes, "Chained" is the perfect follower to the wonderful "Dead City Dreaming". One more time the album is perfect, from the great sound production made in Fredrik Nordström to the beautiful guitar solos and the powerful rhythmics, there's abolutely nothing wrong about it. Mikael "chorus-machine" Dahl brings a bunch of splendid melodies everywhere, and this trademark is what gives to CRYSTAL EYES an extremely catchy personnality. Whatever it's a fast and powerful heavy track or a calm ballad, each CRYSTAL EYES's song is an hymn made of hyper melodic refrains. BY: Séb

Una mela al giorno leva il medico di torno... e un buon album power al giorno leva la noia e lo stress! Scherzi a parte, in questa impresa (far passare lo stresso della giornata si intende) ci sono riusciti i Crystal Eyes, che arrivano direttamente dalla Svezia con questo sesto lavoro in studio per la Metal Heaven. Di cosa si tratta? Bhè, è una buona combinazione di Gamma Ray, Helloween, Blind Guardian con piccola spruzzatina di Manowar. Buona perchè non è un semplice copia-incolla di riff già sentiti, ma è un buon insieme di canzoni coerenti e decise di power metal teutonico. I cinque ci sanno fare, questo è indubbio. "Ride The Rainbow" si presenta come brano happy-metal, con coro centrale preso pari-pari dai Manowar, dopo una prima parte molto Gamma Ray anni Novanta. Si pigia sulla cattiveria con "The Fire Of Hades" e "The Devil Inside", mentre i già citati Bardi di Hansi e soci vengono chiamati in causa soprattutto in "Fighting" e (guarda caso) nella conclusiva "Guardian", il cui arpeggio iniziale richiama palesemente la gloriosa Bard's song, mentre (tanto per non farsi mancare nulla) la voce del singer Adamsen (a tratti davvero molto simile a quella di Hansi Kürsch ) si fa accompagnare da uno stuolo di chitarre Maideniano nella vera punta di diamante dell'album, quella "Shadow Rider" che risulta essere davvero un grandissimo pezzo power, lungo ma sempre epico e avvincente. Tanti gruppi di "grido" sono stati citati in questa mia recensione, ma non perchè i nostri siano dei copioni (mi ripeto ma non vorrei aver fuorviato i lettori), ma semplicemente perchè il loro sound pesca da tutte queste realtà storiche (e comunque per loro inarrivabili, almeno per ora) creando un'alchimia notevolissima. In conclusione un album che non scrive nulla sul libro delle regole del buon Metal, ma che entra di diritto su quello delle migliori uscite del genere degli ultimi mesi. The Swedish metal outfit Crystal Eyes is around for many years and have already released several albums.The quintet head intro Chained with Ride The Rainbow, a riff-based rocker. The riffing is a bit Accept-like... And somehow the Swedish revive the early / mid-80's and so you find reminiscences to bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Singer Nico Adamsen is doing good, sometimes I miss a bit power.. And soon it becomes clear that the guys don't try to create something new, they are based in 80's heavy metal and that's what they enjoy playing - and so they do. And so fans of 80's metal will enjoy the album too. At The Fire Of Hades the vocals are quite up-front, but not too much. Beside the riffing you get a short lead guitar part, also quite melodic - like the vocal lines. Then they stop dead and it's only acoustic guitars and vocals, but then they are back full force. The vocals remind me here a bit of Andy B. Franck (Brainstorm, Symphorce). A bit heavier is the following The Devil Inside, this one has a rock edge... And the sound is a bit 70's. The chorus is catchy and you soon will find yourself singing along. With Waves Of War you get a song about pirates and if you expect to find some similarities to Running Wild, then you are right. Balladesque starts Dying In The Rain, but then becomes a mid-paced rocker with heavy riffs. Singer Nico Adamsen has a good voice and also adds some aggressiveness, I only miss a bit the intensity here... More emotions. Another Accept-like rocker is Fighting, the up-tempo track is also a bit more aggressive then the previous ones. Last, but not least they present a ballad with acoustic guitars which has a slight epic touch and is almost anthem-like. A nice track to slowly faded out the album.Okay, the Swedish aren't presenting anything new, they stick to their favorite sound and so this is an 80's heavy metal album. Everybody who thinks 80's heavy metal is the past, don't need to check them out! If you still listen to some of the old 80's heavy metal bands / albums, then give it a try BY: Claudia Ehrhardt

Crystal Eyes eine seit 1992 bestehende Band aus Schweden. Bisher hat kaum jemand von ihnen gehört obwohl es sie schön länger gibt. Nun es liegt daran, das die sehr gut ist aber eben nur gut, sie klingt wie die Musik der älteren Zeit. Leider wird dies heute nicht mehr von so vielen favorisiert. Diese Band spielt nix neues aber doch was sie spielt hat klasse. Schon alleine der Opener Ride the Rainbow geht ins Ohr und wandelt ihn darin zu einem Ohrwurm um, man will mehr und das bekommt man auf der CD. Die Lieder sind allesamt gleich aufgebaut: Geile Riffs, viele Solis und die Melodie des Heavy Metal! Fighting ist der passende Titel für den Song, er regt an zum Kämpfen und um nicht aufzugeben. Der Einstieg in Waves of War erzeugt Gänsehaut, Nico Adamsen hat die passende Stimme für diese Band und diese Art des Metals. Die Lieder hören sich an wie Kopien der ganz Großen wie Accept, Blind Guardian, Judas Priest und Running Wild. Das kommt wohl daher das sich Crystal Eyes sehr an die alten Bands dran gehangen haben und nun den gleichen Stil spielen. Fazit: Es ist nicht perfekt, es ist nicht schlecht, es ist einfach Heavy Metal der 80er. Von mir bekommen Crystal Eyes für ihr fünftes Studioalbum ganze 4 Igel, mit der Hoffnung das von ihnen bald noch mehr zu hören ist! BY: Marcel

The sixth full length platter from Sweden’s Crystal Eyes delivers more of the same Judas Priest meets Accept metal - always keeping the guitar hooks and vocal melodies at the forefront of their style. Danish singer Nico Adamsen seems to have settled in well for the band, as he commands the microphone with confidence, adequately capable of soaring to the heavens such as the ending high refrain during "Ride the Rainbow". "Waves of War" may be the best Running Wild composition not done by Rolf in the last 11 years (you have to love the ‘Jolly Roger’ lyric mention and the sea pirate chorus) while "Fires Of Hades" represents mid tempo Accept anthem at its simplest pleasure - along with some marching drum fills out of Stefan Svantesson just to differentiate themselves. Guitarists Mikael Dahl and Paul Pettersson don’t necessarily double up every riff- they can also navigate as individuals and create some potent material such as "The Devil Inside" and "Guardian". I know a lot of times as bands mature they grow tired, stale and often repeat themselves ad nausea- but thankfully Crystal Eyes align themselves as an act that started off good and makes small strides to greatness with every follow up effort. Even the ballads have depth of musicianship, sweeping riffs and searing solo work – which makes "Dying In The Rain" less in the sugar coated glam world and more in tune with the Metallica challenge camp. What distinguishes them from the current breed are their hooks, which deceptively start off stripped down and then dual harmonies abound, twist and turns where the rhythm section gets a chance to flex their chops. "Shadow Rider" keeps moving back to the similar vein of "Hallowed Be Thy Name" and its ending for instance, the building guitar segueing into Adamsen’s jail cell / Steve Perry helium cries. Clichéd-perhaps. Making me want to pull out the denim jacket, crank the stereo to 10 and piss my neighbors off? Certainly. There’s plenty of room for Primal Fear, and I think Crystal Eyes prefers to play off the 1981 1985 eras of their heroes - so "Chained" should be yours if you miss that era, that sound, that fire, that passion. Une ambiance intimiste qui se rapproche de ces bons salons de thé où l’on pouvait y trouver ces grands-mères du troisième age sorties en permission pour le goûter avec comme seul impératif de rentrer avant le coucher du soleil. C’est dans ce lieu distrayant que commence mon introduction sur CRYSTAL EYES. Mes recherches me conduisirent encore une fois en Suède où le groupe existe depuis 16 ans. Je crois véritablement que je vais finir par m’y installer dans ce pays. Ne cherchez aucun rapprochement avec le style du groupe et le salon de thé, vous ne trouverez pas, pas tout de suite, en tout cas... Chained est leur sixième album et c’est leur chanteur, Søren Nico Adamsen que j’attends pour une interview particulière. Il est arrivé avec un gros paquet à bout de bras, une couverture multicolore qui dépassait allègrement de chaque côté. Présentation rapide alors qu’il finit de s’installer. Puis curieux, il me pose des questions sur ce que j’ai pensé de l’album. Que dire ? Ma foi, un bon album de power à recommander pleinement à tous les fans du style qui trouvera facilement une place de choix, à mettre indiscutablement au côté de Kamelot et Secret Sphere. Quant à la production, elle est impeccable, mixé au Studio Fredman (Dimmu Borgir, Dream Evil, Opeth), voila qui explique tout. Au détour de quelques questions que je me risque à demander, j’apprends que Mikael Dahl, le principal compositeur est tombé dans la marmite du heavy grâce à Iron Maiden, intéressé plus particulièrement par l’album The Number of the Beast. Judas Priest a confirmé sa passion et bien sûr Black Sabbath fait partie de ses nombreuses influences. Tant de références qui se trouveraient rapidement limitées si on omettait de citer Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian et Yngwie Malmsteen évidemment. CRYSTAL EYES s’ouvre donc sur la diversité de ces multiples influences mais reste confiné dans un registre tellement revisité. Et pour en revenir à l’œuvre en elle-même ? Qu’en est il ? Humm, oui, bien sûr. Les compositions sont riches, les mélodies oscillent entre violence des riffs et coups de batterie syncopées. Ride The Rainbow ouvre le bal, des éclats de rire ponctuent le morceau. The Fire of Hades serait plus une réminiscence des ingrédients classiques propre à Hammerfall. The Devil Inside, Waves of War, Fighting retiendront l’attention par leurs riffs aussi puissants qu’incisifs, le bon heavy énergique prend forme pour remuer nos carcasses. Guardian se démarque par la particularité d’une guitare acoustique et il s’agit d’une véritable orchestration qui cristallise le tempo. Influence singulière d’Helloween que l’on distingue notamment à travers les refrains et les chœurs qui donnent plus d’intensité à l’ensemble. Ambiance plutôt joyeuse comme toutes histoires qui se terminent avec une happy end. Une happy end reprit par Nico alors qu’il ne cessait depuis le début de notre rencontre d’observer par-dessus ce sac en osier écru avec une bordure en ourson. Curieux !! Et il voulut savoir ce que je pensais de sa voix, Chained étant le deuxième album où il officie, ce qui peut expliquer qu’il puisse avoir des attentes sur ces performances. Une bonne dose de fureur est transmise à travers la puissance vocale qui se rapprocherait sans mal d’Astral Doors, de Dio. Le vocaliste démontre sa grande aptitude à manier les notes les plus graves aux plus aigues et effectivement sa voix peut monter très haut. Un grand sourire s’afficha sur son visage d’entendre ces quelques mots et il sortit de ce panier en osier son dernier album qu’il me tendit. Je découvrais dès lors la cover de Chained qui est en mon sens plus symbolique qu’en rapport direct avec la musique. Et pour conclure, que vois-je ? Un joli baigneur qu’il sortit de ce panier qui n’était en réalité qu’un couffin. Pas tout à fait deux mois est déjà une frimousse à vous faire fondre, un très beau bébé. Ah oui, ma conclusion, vous voulez peut être l’entendre. CRYSTAL EYES présente un bon album qui ravira les fans du genre. Un beau bébé comme je vous le disais. BY: Kalissa

Na de release van hun vierde album ‘Confessions of the Maker ‘ (2005) was het zoeken naar een nieuwe zanger. In Nico Adamsen vonden ze de ideale stem om opvolger ‘Chained’ in te blikken. Opener ‘Ride the Rainbow’ maakt dit snel duidelijk. Nico heeft een pure heavy voice die klinkt als een bel. Laat u hiervan snel overtuigen op de coda van dit eerste nummer: de hoge, ijle uithalen zitten er pal op. Hierna volgt ‘The Fire of Hades’, een iets meer technisch nummer. Crystal Eys loopt als een trein. Tekstueel vind ik ‘The Devil Inside’ wel knap werken. ‘Dying in the Rain’ start als een ballade, maar dat is maar schijn. De echte tranenplukker staat achteraan. ‘Guardian’ tokkelt rustig op akoestische gitaarklanken en that’s it. Een niet zo evidente keuze. Deze ‘Chained kan je zeker een degelijk album noemen, met geen grote verrassingen, wel kwaliteitsvolle songs. Misschien kan je ze verwijten dat ze zich wel erg sterk richten op de metalsound van de jaren ’80, genre Judas Priest of Accept. Maar laat dat je niet tegenhouden van deze te proeven. BY: Gerry Croon

Reconozco que cuando pinché el disco esperaba encontrarme con otro de esos álbumes de pelo rubio y acento norteño que acabas quitando antes de llegar a la cuarta canción y mas sabiendo que Crystal Eyes se encontraban tras este nuevo lanzamiento. Que queréis que os diga, hasta el dia de hoy nunca me habian dicho absolutamente nada y ya llevan unos cuantos discos a sus espaldas. Recuerdo haber escuchado su “Vengeance Descending” sin demasiado entusiasmo... Pero basta ya de mirar al pasado, lo que importa es el presente y sobre todo, lo que acontece a “Chained”, el nuevo disco de los suecos Crystal Eyes. ¿Cual es mi primera impresión? Bien, tengo que admitir que estos chicos se han puesto las pilas y han editado un trabajo de Heavy Metal melódico de alto standing. Sin rebuscar fórmulas imposibles ni alejarse de los decretos del Heavy Metal Suecos, han sabido escoger lo mejor del género para moldear 9 canciones que inducen a escucharlas una y otra vez. Su estilo los conduce a practicar un metal con bases tradicionales que mezcla elementos melódicos para convertir sus temas en piezas la mas de llevaderas. Con un vocalista competente al que apoyan unos excelentes coros presentes en casi todas las canciones, Crystal Eyes ha querido clavar 9 temazos, y casi lo consiguen. El disco empieza fuerte con “Ride The Rainbow”, un corte muy Heavy que utiliza su estribillo para dar la bienvenida a los afortunados. Muy acertados los coros que dibujan esa estética metalera y señalan una producción envidiable, probad a subir el volumen, vuestros altavoces no se lamentarán en absoluto. Algo mas melódica se presenta “The Devil Inside” uno de los cortes mas divertidos del disco que una vez mas se vale de su estribillo para embelesar al respetable. En “Waves Of War”, tema Power Metalero donde los halla, se luce la guitarra de Mikael Dahl en riffs y solos poco virtuosos pero acordes con un gran tema. Quizás sea hora de que vuelque mis esfuerzos en ahondar tras el material que esconde esta banda, puesto que “Chained” me ha hecho abrir los ojos y supongo que a muchos les ocurrirá lo mismo... Sixième album pour Crystal Eyes dont la musique oscille entre un heavy proche de Helloween, Running Wild et Scanner. Cela nous donne des titres puissants qui entraînent l'auditeur dans un univers coloré, chargé d'émotion, notamment grâce à la voix chaude de Soren Nico Adamsen. Les tempos médiums sont nombreux ("The Fire of Hades", "The Devil Inside"), mais ils sont compensés par certains titres épiques qui retournent tout sur leur passage ("Waves of War", "Ride the Rainbow", "Fighting"), nous montrant que le groupe est capable de varier les ambiances. Le titre "Lonely Ball of Fate" est un bon exemple de ce mariage entre puissance et mélodies, tandis que ("Dying in the Rain" et "Guardian") jouent la carte de la ballade, plus classique pour le premier titre, d'influences médiévales ou zeppelinienne pour la seconde. I must give these Swedes some major props. They have been out sixteen years and this is their now sixth release. This is a power metal band that should have made it by now, but have been plagued by poor label and distro deals. Perhaps, now that they are on Metal Heaven they will get some recognition. This is no frills straight up metal with no strings attached. What you hear is what you get. Danish vocalist Nico Adamsen is the newest member to take hold of the mic. With that said, the opener “Ride The Rainbow” is a typical silly fantasy title that starts out the disc and is a mid paced number that contains nice pacing, catchy riffs and choruses that will have you shouting. This will be a nice crowd pleaser in the live circuit. Nico’s voice is a cross between mid to higher range, and works well for this genre. As we go through the paces, each song is pretty much laced with happy riffs and good beats. The tempos vary without ever going extreme. Things are kept in check from beginning to end with the last song “Guardian” being an acoustic number that is very folky. As I said before, nothing on here is original. It’s just fun music to be taken lightly. Basically, if you are a fan of the German power metal scene and you know the artists associated with the genre, then I can’t see why you won’t have this in your collection. Devo ammetterlo, non conoscevo questi ragazzi svedesi, Crystal Eyes, prima che mi giungesse fra le mani quest’album, per cui ho dovuto un po’ documentarmi su di loro e constatare che esistono dalla fine degli anni ’90 e che questo Chained, appena pubblicato sotto l’egida della Metal Heaven, rappresenta la loro sesta fatica. La proposta del quintetto è un heavy / power metal a metà strada tra scuola svedese e tedesca. Ciò che salta subito all’occhio è l’immediatezza con cui riff e refrain entrino in testa per non andarsene più. I Crystal Eyes hanno una notevole capacità di tessere melodie semplici ma difficilmente banali, dimostrando soprattutto di aver assimilato benissimo le lezioni impartite in passato da coloro che sono stati fonte d’ispirazione per il genere che i nostri propongono. Si va dai richiami ai Judas Priest (Ride the Rainbow e Fighting), a Ronnie James Dio (The Fire of Hades) fino agli onnipresenti Iron Maiden (Lonely Ball of Hate). Questo disco è un po’ un compendio di tutto ciò che di buono è stato realizzato in campo heavy metal nelle stagioni ’80 e ’90, senza però scadere nel copia/incolla. Tecnicamente è da segnalare l’ugola di Nico Adamsen, decisamente dotato, pur non avendo la tipica voce da cantante power, tutta acuti in falsetto (cosa che peraltro il sottoscritto detesta), ma, anzi, decisamente corposa anche sulle tonalità più elevate. Da segnalare in particolar modo Waves of War, con cori epici degni dei Blind Guardian esordienti e dei primi Helloween e la medieval ballad posta in chiusura, ovvero Guardian… indovinate un po’ da quale gruppo prende spunto? Nulla di nuovo sotto il sole, dunque, ma l’acquisto è caldamente consigliato a chi apprezza il genere, perché il disco si lascia ascoltare piacevolmente, nonostante si tratti di materiale già abbondantemente usato ed abusato, ma del resto, siamo di fronte ad un genere che da tanti, troppi anni non ha più molto da offrire sul piano dell’originalità. “My dream is to make a living out of my music”. These are the last words of band-leader Mikael Dahl of the Swedish band Crystal Eyes on his personal bio on the band’s website. Last year I did an interview with this dude and asked him about if this wish had already come true. Unfortunately not, these days it is not that easy anymore to make a real living with the kind of heavy metal music this band makes. Of course they are able to put out a record so now and then but the only people that get a big part of the income of an album are most of the times the record-companies. With the fifth album ‘Chained’ the band has a new label, it’s Metal Heaven from Germany. One of the bands that still got lucky with making the exact same music like Crystal Eyes are their fellow landsmen Hammerfall. If you would care to listen to the music of Crystal Eyes not knowing which CD would be in your player you would say it was Hammerfall you were listening to. I am not kidding, the style of music is like an identical twin to the sound, style and arrangements of Hammerfall. Also vocalist Nico Adamsen who joined the band during their previous album sounds like if you would be listening to Joachim Cans. Than the question remains why a band like Hammerfall made it big and Crystal Eyes not. They even started around the same time in the beginning of the nineties. I can only imagine it has something to do with the gimmicks Hammerfall uses on stage and they had a deal with one of the bigger companies like Nuclear Blast who put more money in the bands they believe in for promotion. It’s all about having luck or not in the music-business. If you would put the new album from Crystal Eyes into a Hammerfall sleeve, promote it like that and put the albums in those sleeves in the stores than soon Mikael Dahl would see his dream come true and he would be able to quit his job soon. But reality is that you can’t do that so with this album I am sure the band will reach some metal ears around the world but not in those numbers he desires I am afraid. But hey, if all you Hammerfall fans give this band a break and you would give Mikael’s album a chance, this dude would be heading in the right direction. Crystal Eyes is Hammerfall, Hammerfall is Crystal Eyes. Love it or hate it. I am still on the ‘love it’ side but slowly my musical interests is going another way and do I need some more than the straight and kind of simple heavy metal these kind of band are making. But still I get a feeling of satisfaction after completing listening to an album like ‘Chained’… BY: Eddy

Una conquista senza sangue La proverbiale indipendenza svedese si è lasciata conquistare dalle (barbare?) mode germaniche. Per fortuna non è un'invasione generalizzata, ma interessa solo i Crystal Eyes, band di power metal che, dal 1999 (anno della sua fondazione), ha sempre dimostrato una forte dipendenza dal metal teutonico ed, in particolare, dai Gamma Ray, Rage e (soprattutto nella ballata di chiusura dell'album in commento: "Guardian") dai Blind Guardian. "Chained" ripropone quanto già i cinque precedenti lavori avevano rivelato: una band incline alla melodia ed agli anthems ricchi di cori. L'apprezzabile produzione e la pur meritevole capacità compositiva maturata dai cinque scandinavi nel corso degli anni non riescono, tuttavia, a conferire al platter quel quid pluris necessario a solcare il Rubicone. Ma questo è lo scotto da pagare quando ci si accontenta di riferimenti ormai esauriti e statici. È una produzione che, in ogni caso, lascia l'amaro in bocca per quelle evidenti potenzialità non sfruttate. L'album, come molti della stessa fattura, diverte sin quando si trova tra le ingorde labbra del lettore cd, grazie alla sua immediata presa ed alla sapiente miscela degli elementi strumentali; ma, allontanato solo per qualche minuto, facilmente ci si dimentica di quanto poco prima aveva entusiasmato. Crystal Eyes was formed in 1992 to keep the legacy of heavy metal set in the eighties by Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, etc. A strong underground reputation was built during the mid 90's with four official demo tapes. Later they started to release several albums through different record labels. "Chained" is already their sixth album and the second with vocalist Nico Adamsen. "Chained" is a good melodic metal album, with strong melodies, great riffs, great twin guitar leads and hooklines. Vocalist Nico is singing very powerful, but has also got a very melodic voice. Their songs are diverse in tempo and are clearly influenced by "older" bands like Iron Maiden and Helloween, but also by "newer" bands like Gamma Ray, HammerFall and Nocturnal Rites. Seit bald 17 Jahren gibt es die schwedische Metalband nun schon. Den Durchbruch haben sie aber noch nicht geschafft, obwohl sie wirklich geil sind. Das hört man auch auf ihrem fünften Output „Chained“. Schon der Opener „Ride The Rainbow“ ist eine klasse Metal-Hymne. Etwas progressiver hört sich „The Fire Of Hades“ an, glänzt aber dank dem geilen Gesang von Nico Adamsen. Beim Hardrock-Stück „The Devil Inside“ kommen bei mir Vergleiche zu Accept auf. Dafür geht „Waves Of War“ eher Richtung Hammerfall und hätte durchaus auf die Threshold-CD gepasst. Gemächlicher geht es bei „Dying In The Rain“ zur Sache, wobei beim Refrain doch etwas Gas gegeben wird. „Fighting“ hört sich an wie Ruckus, der ehemaligen Band von Shakra-Chef Thom Blunier und des ersten Shakra-Shouters Pete Wiedmer. Für nicht so gelungen erachte ich „Shadow Rider“. dafür hebt „Lonely Ball Of Fate“ wieder ab mit einem Hammer-Refrain und tollem Solo. Beim finalen Schlusspunkt „Guardian“ haben sie sich von Blind Guardian inspirieren lassen, denn der erinnert mich an deren „The Bard´s Song“. Als Fazit kann man sagen, das Crystal Eyes ein sehr gutes Album gelungen ist, aber ob das zum endgültigen Durchbruch reicht, weiss ich leider nicht BY: Patrick

Swedish metal act Crystal Eyes is here with their 5th album, and it's filled with nice power metal with melodic hardrock influences. The album made me think of a melodic metal drink mixed with Helloween, Crystal Ball and Hammerfall. This is very well-produced and their Danish singer Nico Adamsen have a strong good voice that suits their sound just perfect. The album contains nine songs where a couple of the songs stands out more than the rest. The songs that captures my attention are filled with strong melodies with great riffs and big hooklines. Just listen to the powerful "The Fire Of Hades" that sits on a good chorus. "Waves Of War" could have been taken from an early Helloween album. "Dying In The Rain" is more of a melodic hardrock song in the same vein as Crystal Ball with big guitars. "Fighting" is Hammerfall all the way with a catchy chorus and great riffs and melodies. The album ends with the nice acoustic "Guardian". This is a nice metal album with big riffs, powerful sound and strong melodies. Not all songs are that great but big parts of the album sounds very good. Check it out if you're into power metal. The album is mixed by Fredrik Nordstrom (Hammerfall). BY: Juha Harjula

Seemingly, the line-up of Crystal Eyes has once again solidified, giving way for the group to concentrate delivering another set of solid Heavy Rock to the masses. “Chained” is nine slabs of granite with such titles as ‘The Devil Inside’, ‘The Fire Of Hades’, and ‘Guardian’, creating a dark and driven atmosphere. A no nonsense collection of molten Metal that should satisfy any and all fans of this group. Stand out tracks: ‘Dying In The Rain’, ‘Shadow Rider’ and ‘Guardian’. BY: Bruce Atkinson

Schweden ist ja bekannt dafür, dass von dort haufenweise Bands kommen, die nicht nur gute Melodien, sondern auch gute Songs insgesamt in Petto haben. CRYSTAL EYES gehören zu der Sorte von Bands, die gute Songs schreiben, nette Melodien verarbeiten, gleichzeitig jedoch auch ordentlich Arsch treten können. Das neue Album der Nordlichter "Chained“ ist zwar bei weitem kein Quell der Eigenständigkeit, allerdings besticht die Platte mit ihrer ganz eigenen, sympathischen Grundstimmung. Sei es nun die erstklassige Produktion oder die wirklich sehr gut gespielten Songs, die Platte hat etwas an sich, was den Hörer für eine bestimmte Zeit zu fesseln weiß. Natürlich werden einige nun schreien und fragen, wer denn noch eine Melodic-Power-Metal-Band braucht. Dabei ist allerdings zu beachten, dass in letzter Zeit keine sonderlich tolle Combo aus dem kühlen Land hervorgekrochen ist. Natürlich kann niemand verleugnen, dass die Szene eine Zeit lang sehr überlaufen war, langsam aber mal wieder frisches BLut gebrauchen kann. CRYSTAL EYES können aber bereits auf ein paar Scheiben zurückblicken und müssen sich mit dem Stempel Newcomer wohl kaum begnügen. Dass sie keine Anfänger sind, beweisen Kracher der Marke "The Fire OF Hades“, "The Devil Inside“, "Fighting“ oder das besinnliche "Guardian“ (erinnert tatsächlich etwas an BLIND GUARDIAN). Hier und da überzeugt Sänger Nico Adamsen zwar nicht auf ganzer Linie, das Manko hält sich allerdings in Grenzen. Der Innovationspreis geht in diesem Jahr zwar wieder einmal nicht nach Schweden, dennoch sollte man CRYSTAL EYES Beachtung schenken. Diese haben sie nämlich mehr als verdient. BY: Pinhead

2008 has not been power metal's year. With lackluster efforts from Pagan's Mind, Communic, Sabaton, Pyramaze, Kiuas, Cryonic Temple, Edguy et al, European power metal has seen better days. Enter Crystal Eyes, a band typically overshadowed by the aforementioned acts (among others), who are no longer satisfied with sitting on the back burner. Chained is among 2008's greatest power metal albums, and that's saying something because it's also one of the most safely conventional albums the genre has seen in some time. These Swedes have created a simple, riff-driven machine that works because it's clear they were passionate about creating a back to the roots heavy metal effort. Indeed, heavy metal plays a bigger part in the songwriting process here than in most modern power metal releases. Most of the songs gallop along at a leisurely mid-pace; the idea of non-stop double bass has been mostly abandoned in favor of something more traditional (with the exception of the awfully Dragonforce-esque track "Waves of War"), and I'm not complaining. And to Chained's credit, when it does revert back to the speedy power metal mindset it usually takes an approach similar to JP's Painkiller or old Running Wild, both of which possess killer double bass. Singer Søren Nico Adamsen has fantastic range and utilizes it well. The softer sections of the album sound just as good as the more up-tempo numbers. The man has power and plenty of charisma to go with it, bringing to mind a fellow master of the trade in Urban Breed, though Adamsen isn't quite on Breed's level. But it should be noted that people who absolutely require good vocals on their power metal albums (I'm beginning to develop such demands) should be pleased with Adamsen's performance. He's a damn fine mid-range singer and he compliments the riff and lead-work of the two guitarists very well. He also gets extra points for the unabashed Dio tribute in "Dying in the Rain", where we hear a familiar "Look out! Yeaaaheeyeaheyeaahhh, MmmmmMmmmm." The first time I heard that I nearly fell out of my chair, very cool! Chained won't convert anyone who previously hated power metal or heavy-influenced power metal, but I'm certain it will satisfy fans of the genre with its no-bullshit approach to catchy, well-produced, consistent, riff-centric Europower. Old Helloween and Iron Maiden, as two of the great powers of Heavy Metal and Power Metal, are the main influences of many Metal bands for almost 20 years. When melding these two bands together you get something great, melodic, powerful and memorable. So there you have it, the result of the melding – Crystal Eyes’s new album, Chained. The Swedish Power Metallers from Boras, Crystal Eyes , began their journey in 1992, when modern Power Metal started to emerge. Only in 1999 they released their first official album, World Of Black And Silver, under the label CLM. Years after they released four albums with gems like: In Silence They March (2000) and Confessions Of The Maker (2005), that was fronted by the legendary vocalist , as a session member, Daniel Heiman from Heed. This year Chained came out under the band’s new label Metal Heaven. The production of this release by Mikael Dahl, who is the founder and guitarist of the band, was done with high quality. In addition, another great name that is involved with the work behind the curtains is no other than the producer Fredrik Nordstrom that played his part as the mixer. The band’s sound continues to be sharp and accurate as the last three albums and continues to amaze every time it is heard. This sound production is not that original because there are various bands who are using this type of sharpness like: Hammerfall, which is one of Nordstrom’s works, and the German Running Wild. Although not that original with their sound, Crystal Eyes still made a wonderful piece and bottom line the material is the most important playing card of the Metal game. Chained brought a heavier approach and a heavier Crystal Eyes. The joining of the new guitarist in 2007, Pal Petterson, allowed Crystal Eyes to create various harmonies and melodies and, of course, being a lot heavier in the rhythm section. Throughout the album, the melodies and heavy riffs slide along with some atmospheric parts of keyboards. As for the lyrics, Crystal Eyes mainly follows the same themes like fantasy, mystery, epics and Sci-Fi. Another interesting thing in the band’s music on Chained is that they tried to bring something a bit different, but in a smaller scale, something that sounds like a Hard Rock approach. For example small sections of the Maidenish track: “Lonely Ball Of Fate”. This approach was noticed in the past in early 90’s Helloween and Gamma Ray albums. Crystal Eyes, as a group, possess some great talents that are a match for every veteran group in the Metal world. The main stars of the band in this album are the diverse vocalist, Nico Admasen which joined the band in 2005 from the Heavy / Glam Metal band Starrats and also the new frontman of the Swiss Thrash Metal band Artillery, is, with no doubt, a huge success in Crystal Eyes. His debut appearance was on 2006’s album, Dead City Dreaming. His voice is clean yet with some small measure of raspiness that very much resembles the German Angel Dust’s ex-frontman, Dirk Thurisch, but with much more energy. In addition his ability to reach high notes is very good and the good thing is that he is not using it excessively. He, absolutely, fits the band like a glove. Another guy to mention is the founder and producer, Mikael Dahl, who is also the guitarist, vocalist and keyboard player in this release. In the early days of Crystal Eyes, Dahl was the lead vocalist and guitarist. In 2005 he let the vocals role go to Daniel Heiman that recorded the vocals for Confessions Of The Maker. After the joining of Nico to the band, Dahl still took the vocals but not as lead. In this release, he can be heard, dueting with Nico, in one of the most beautiful epic ballads every written, “Guardian”. As a guitar player, he lets his influences flow and creates some main great riffs and some captivating solo efforts. In the keyboard sections he fulfills the role of the atmosphere master, like many other keyboard players in the genre. The other members of Crystal Eyes are doing a hell of a job that is not a stranger for this group. The songs, oh the songs, are amazing and it’s very hard to choose from them. Every one of these tracks is a memorable track that is sure not to leave your repeat button. But one must choose from this list of “to be” classics. The opener, “Ride The Rainbow” , emphasizes the mixture of Helloween and Iron Maiden with great melodic heavy riffs, a catchy chorus, speed and an amazing ending. The epic “The Fires Of Hades” is a well crafted song that produces some feelings, rather cold than warmth, but still a hell of track that possess everything. “Waves Of War” sounds like a Running Wild tune tribute with the return of the Jolly Roger. This song has the speed and melody and a well done chorus. “Fighting” is an Heavy Metal anthem for the support of Metal all around. Definitely has the stuff to be recognized as an 80’s song or a number by Starrats – “Keep On Fighting, You Are Born To Rock Forever”. “Shadow Rider” is the best of this release with heavy riffs, a chorus that bring tears to your eyes with powerful lyrics and amazing melodies. The final song, as mentioned before, is the epic yet short ballad, “Guardian”. There are not enough words to express about this song, its more than great its divine. Crystal Eyes made their best effort yet. Chained is an album, which with hope, will be recognized as a classic one day by the Metal community. May the Crystals will continue to produce amazing albums as this one and one thing is for sure – the craving has already began – “I am the lord of the fallen , the one who follows you night and day”. The Swedish outfit Crystal Eyes continues their quest of paying homage to the Heavy Metal legacy set in the eighties by bands like Iron Maiden, Accept, Judas Priest etc. Ever since the formation in 1992 they have stayed true to their roots and big changes have been reduced to developments regarding production and performance. Chained is Crystal Eyes sixth album and after a couple of years with changes on the vocal spot the band is now intact with the same line-up as on its predecessor Dead City Dreaming. Those of you who seek originality in music won't find anything of interest here since Chained is a long ride with hints and references to the legends of Heavy Metal. I don't look upon this as a big problem though since it's done with such love and passion. Waves Of War (Running Wild) and Guardian (Blind Guardian) balance on a narrow thread of being pure rip-offs but apart from them it's more of a melting pot of twin guitars á la Maiden, Accept and Sabbath riffs, Hammerfall melodies etc. The highlights of Chained can be found on the first half of the album. Ride The Rainbow with pumping bass drums and a memorable chorus works as a salvation for those who dig what genre colleagues like Hammerfall, Primal Fear and Steel Attack are doing today. The Fire Of Hades is a great composition in midtempo that resembles the feeling of Black Sabbath's Headless Cross. Waves Of War with its effective and catchy chorus is Running Wild all over, even so regarding the lyrics where Jolly Roger is mentioned. Nevertheless a highly enjoyable track that stays in your head afterwards. This isn't a groundbreaking release that will change your perception of things but still a solid album from beginning to the end without any flaws whatsoever. On top of that we have a great production done by Fredrik Nordström in Studio Fredaman with a fat and crystal clear sound. All fans of Heavy/Power Metal inspired by the dinosaurs from the eighties should find this album most appealing. BY: Hawk

Chained won't convert anyone who previously hated Power Metal or Heavy-influenced Power Metal, but I'm certain it will satisfy fans of the genre with its no-bullshit approach to catchy, well-produced, consistent, riff-centric Europower. CRYSTAL EYES siguen editando discos con regularidad a pesar de que apenas son conocidos, eso no les impide tener fe en su propia música y este es el sexto álbum desde que debutaran en 1.999. La banda con algunos cambios en el pasado ha crecido constantemente, a día de hoy trabajan las guitarras rítmicas mucho mejor que antaño, y el apartado vocal también ha mejorado con un Nico Adamsen (Artillery) sabiendo jugar con varias tonalidades como demuestra en “The fire of Hades”. El disco parece perseguir alejarse de los parámetros del llamado Power Metal melódico a favor del Heavy Metal mas tradicional, medios tiempos como “Dying in the rain” eran propios de formaciones como Chroming Rose o Heaven’s Gate; el solo de guitarra de “The Devil inside” es puro Wolf Hoffman (Accept), y es que creo que en este disco por fin se ha destapado del todo el guitarrista Mikael Dahl dejando rienda suelta a sus influencias e imaginación, olvidándose de si tal escala suena a una u otra banda. “Wades of war”, de lo mejor del disco, recuerda mucho a Running Wild, tanto que si conoces la carera de los alemanes, puedes llegar a pensar que se trata de alguna versión. Dejan traslucir también influencias de Iron Maiden en varios momentos del disco, especialmente en “Lonely ball of hate” y “Shadow rider”. Pero su influencia no se queda en los grandes clásicos conocidos, temas como “Fighting” de estructura Hard & Heavy nos hace pensar en bandas como Noisehunter o Gravestone en su vertiente as melódica. El disco termina con una balada acústica y muy coral titulada “Guardian” y que perfectamente podrían haber grabado Blind Guardian. A pesar de todas esas influencias claras, no llegan a imitar a ninguna banda, tal vez tras cinco discos han decidido cambiar de camino sin romper del todo con el pasado, me da la sensación que estamos ante un disco-puente, pero esto no es óbice para que por si solo carezca de sentido. El fallo del álbum es el de casi todas las bandas de poco presupuesto, la producción, que sin ser llegara a estropear en ningún momento los temas, tampoco les aporta nada. BY: Ainhoa Urrutikoetxea

Und wieder eine Band, die sich dem Heavy Metal der 80er und seinen Vertretern verschrieben hat. Dazu entschied sich die schwedische Formation Crystal Eyes 1992; vier Jahre später hatte man es bereits ins Vorprogramm von Blind Guardian geschafft. In diesem Jahr melden sie sich mit ihrem fünften Album zurück. „Chained“ heißt das gute Stück und macht mich zum ersten Mal auf die Band aufmerksam. Der Opener „Ride the rainbow“ verspricht fröhliche Melodien, die einem spätestens nach dem zweiten Durchlauf im Ohr festhängen. Am Songwriting lässt sich nichts meckern, die Musiker beherrschen ihr Handwerk und der Gesang ist einfach einwandfrei. Bezogen auf letzteres ist allerdings die Produktion etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig; die Stimme klingt für mich ein wenig zu technisch. Ansonsten ist aber auch die Produktion ganz zufriedenstellend. Der Rest des Albums gestaltet sich mit ähnlich melodiösem, locker leicht gespieltem Material, angesiedelt zwischen Melodic Rock und Heavy Metal. Mit weiteren sieben Midtempo-Hymnen und einer sehr schönen Ballade eifert man seinen Vorbildern nach und versucht sich in Eingängigkeit selbst zu übertrumpfen. Außer Acht lassen sollte man dabei vielleicht die Lyrics, wird einem doch mit einem Schwung guter Laune von „Waves of war“ erzählt – und auch kitschige Songs über Regenbögen sind nicht jedermanns Sache. Die Meinungen dürften bei Crystal Eyes wohl auseinander gehen. Für die einen ist es vielleicht ein kurzweiliges Klischee-Album, für die anderen aber die neue Genre-Sensation. Beides kann ich nicht verübeln, also werft am besten selbst ein Ohr drauf. BY: Sabine Roloff

Old Helloween and Iron Maiden, as two of the great powers of Heavy Metal and Power Metal, are the main influences of many Metal bands for almost 20 years. When melding these two bands together you get something great, melodic, powerful and memorable. So there you have it, the result of the melding – Crystal Eyes’s new album, Chained. The Swedish Power Metallers from Boras, Crystal Eyes , began their journey in 1992, when modern Power Metal started to emerge. Only in 1999 they released their first official album, World Of Black And Silver, under the label CLM. Years after they released four albums with gems like: In Silence They March (2000) and Confessions Of The Maker (2005), that was fronted by the legendary vocalist , as a session member, Daniel Heiman from Heed. This year Chained came out under the band’s new label Metal Heaven. The production of this release by Mikael Dahl, who is the founder and guitarist of the band, was done with high quality. In addition, another great name that is involved with the work behind the curtains is no other than the producer Fredrik Nordstrom that played his part as the mixer. The band’s sound continues to be sharp and accurate as the last three albums and continues to amaze every time it is heard. This sound production is not that original because there are various bands who are using this type of sharpness like: Hammerfall, which is one of Nordstrom’s works, and the German Running Wild. Although not that original with their sound, Crystal Eyes still made a wonderful piece and bottom line the material is the most important playing card of the Metal game. Chained brought a heavier approach and a heavier Crystal Eyes. The joining of the new guitarist in 2007, Pal Petterson, allowed Crystal Eyes to create various harmonies and melodies and, of course, being a lot heavier in the rhythm section. Throughout the album, the melodies and heavy riffs slide along with some atmospheric parts of keyboards. As for the lyrics, Crystal Eyes mainly follows the same themes like fantasy, mystery, epics and Sci-Fi. Another interesting thing in the band’s music on Chained is that they tried to bring something a bit different, but in a smaller scale, something that sounds like a Hard Rock approach. For example small sections of the Maidenish track: “Lonely Ball Of Fate”. This approach was noticed in the past in early 90’s Helloween and Gamma Ray albums. Crystal Eyes, as a group, possess some great talents that are a match for every veteran group in the Metal world. The main stars of the band in this album are the diverse vocalist, Nico Admasen which joined the band in 2005 from the Heavy / Glam Metal band Starrats and also the new frontman of the Swiss Thrash Metal band Artillery, is, with no doubt, a huge success in Crystal Eyes. His debut appearance was on 2006’s album, Dead City Dreaming. His voice is clean yet with some small measure of raspiness that very much resembles the German Angel Dust’s ex-frontman, Dirk Thurisch, but with much more energy. In addition his ability to reach high notes is very good and the good thing is that he is not using it excessively. He, absolutely, fits the band like a glove. Another guy to mention is the founder and producer, Mikael Dahl, who is also the guitarist, vocalist and keyboard player in this release. In the early days of Crystal Eyes, Dahl was the lead vocalist and guitarist. In 2005 he let the vocals role go to Daniel Heiman that recorded the vocals for Confessions Of The Maker. After the joining of Nico to the band, Dahl still took the vocals but not as lead. In this release, he can be heard, dueting with Nico, in one of the most beautiful epic ballads every written, “Guardian”. As a guitar player, he lets his influences flow and creates some main great riffs and some captivating solo efforts. In the keyboard sections he fulfills the role of the atmosphere master, like many other keyboard players in the genre. The other members of Crystal Eyes are doing a hell of a job that is not a stranger for this group. The songs, oh the songs, are amazing and it’s very hard to choose from them. Every one of these tracks is a memorable track that is sure not to leave your repeat button. But one must choose from this list of “to be” classics. The opener, “Ride The Rainbow” , emphasizes the mixture of Helloween and Iron Maiden with great melodic heavy riffs, a catchy chorus, speed and an amazing ending. The epic “The Fires Of Hades” is a well crafted song that produces some feelings, rather cold than warmth, but still a hell of track that possess everything. “Waves Of War” sounds like a Running Wild tune tribute with the return of the Jolly Roger. This song has the speed and melody and a well done chorus. “Fighting” is an Heavy Metal anthem for the support of Metal all around. Definitely has the stuff to be recognized as an 80’s song or a number by Starrats – “Keep On Fighting, You Are Born To Rock Forever”. “Shadow Rider” is the best of this release with heavy riffs, a chorus that bring tears to your eyes with powerful lyrics and amazing melodies. The final song, as mentioned before, is the epic yet short ballad, “Guardian”. There are not enough words to express about this song, its more than great its divine. Crystal Eyes made their best effort yet. Chained is an album, which with hope, will be recognized as a classic one day by the Metal community. May the Crystals will continue to produce amazing albums as this one and one thing is for sure – the craving has already began – “I am the lord of the fallen , the one who follows you night and day”. "Die Welt ist und bleibt ungerecht!" Dieses Statement markierte ich bei der letzten Platte der fünf Schweden im Angesicht, dass diese Vollblut-Heavy-Metaller nicht mehr Erfolg einheimsen können. Und was damals galt, gilt heute umso mehr. Denn mit "Chained" haben Crystal Eyes noch einen gewaltigen Schritt nach vorne gemacht. Waren früher noch vereinzelte Füller auszumachen, muss man heute schon sehr genau suchen, um diese zu finden. Songs wie "Ride The Rainbow" oder das hardrockige "The Devil Inside" beweisen nicht nur die stilistische Vielfalt der Band, sondern auch deren sicheres Gespür für echte Ohrwürmer. Mit "The Fire Of Hades" hat man sich gar an ein progressives Stück gewagt und glänzt trotzdem. Sänger Nico Adamsen veredelt das Stück mit seiner variablen Stimme zusätzlich. Wie früher ist der Shouter nach wie vor schwierig einzuteilen und klingt wie eine Mischung aus Tyr, Helloween und Powerwolf. Und gerade dieses Spannungsfeld macht das Ganze interessant. So auch in der von Blind Guardian inspirierten Schlussnummer "Guardian". Diese erinnert an "The Bard's Song" und bietet beste Lagerfeueratmosphäre. Bleibt nur noch die Frage, wann denn endlich der verdiente Ruhm und Lohn in Form eines anständigen Support-Slots durch Europa Wirklichkeit wird? Das Warten hat hoffentlich bald ein Ende! BY: Roger W

Zweden was (en is nog steeds) een Walhalla voor powermetal bands. Dat wil alleen niet zeggen dat er geen rip-offs zijn; alhoewel deze band al sinds 1992 bestaat en plukt uit de ruif van o.a Priest, Iron Maiden en Accept (zoals ze zelf min of meer zeggen) is dat nog geen garantie op een goed product. Gitarist Mikael Dahl heeft al een tijd terug de microfoon aan de wilgen laten hangen voor uiteindelijk Nico Adamsen en plukt nu alleen nog aan zes snaren. Dat hij dat goed doet, blijkt wel uit de op zich niet slechte nummers, maar het klinkt allemaal erg gepolijst, erg strak en erg gejat. Dit is hun zesde album (en niet hun vijfde, zoals de meegestuurde info zegt), en ik hoor eigenlijk een aftreksel van Hammerfall. Geen slap aftreksel want daar speelt de band te goed voor. Alleen Hammerfall heeft het gemaakt met een uitgekiende marketingstrategie en dat hebben deze gasten overduidelijk niet gehad. De nummers klinken als middeleeuwse metal strijdliederen, en diegenen die daar niet genoeg van kunnen krijgen, zullen hun tanden niet stukbijten op deze schijf. Hou je van originaliteit dan loop maar een deurtje verder want dat is niet de sterke kant van Crystal Eyes. Mij kan het niet erg boeien in ieder geval, maar het klinkt op zich niet verkeerd....al is 42 minuten ultrakort. BY: Hans

15 ans! Vache, quinze ans que Crystal Eyes essaie de convaincre qui veut bien leur prêter une oreille qu’il n’est pas qu’un simple groupe de heavy mélodique de seconde zone, mais qu’il a entièrement sa place en première division, à côté des Axxis, Helloween et autres Edguy. Et quinze ans qu’il échoue lamentablement. Fort est à parier néanmoins que ce nouvel opus, le sixième des Suédois, pourrait changer la donne. En effet, ‘Chained’ surpasse, et de loin, la grande majorité des albums heavy/speed sortis depuis le début de l’année. Et pourtant la musique des Suédois n’est pas particulièrement originale. Mélange entre le côté ‘happy metal’ de Helloween et le côté plus théâtral grandiloquent (tant au niveau des ambiances que de la voix de Soren Adamsen) de Blind Guardian, Crystal Eyes ne révolutionne pas le style. Certes, mais ses compos, inspirées et convaincantes, ont le doux goût de la conviction et du talent. Qu’elles soient lourdes et heavy (‘Dying in the rain’), plus légères (‘Ride the rainbow’) ou speed (‘Waves of war’), les 9 compos de cet album passent comme une lettre à la poste et l’on se surprend à appuyer machinalement sur la touche Play de son lecteur pour que ce moment de bonheur ne s’arrête pas là. Maîtrisant parfaitement la palette des émotions et ayant visiblement potassé le manuel du heavy mélodique pour les nuls, Crystal Eyes varie son propos et ne livre aucun morceau en dessous. De ‘Ride the rainbow’ jusqu’ la très belle ballade ‘Guardian’ (qui ressemble d’ailleurs fort à un hommage semi-déguisé à Blind Guardian, de par son ambiance feutrée médiévale) aucun temps mort, aucun remplissage. De la bonne musique, tout simplement. Si Crystal Eyes ne parvient pas à percer grâce à cet opus, alors il n’y parviendra jamais. Car si le groupe ne réinvente pas la roue il offre avec cet album un moment d’intense bonheur à tous les amateurs de heavy mélodique. Une réussite! BY: Gegers

CRYSTAL EYES gehören zu den Bands, die schon seit Jahren im Geschäft sind, und denen dennoch der große Durchbruch verwehrt geblieben ist. Schade eigentlich, denn die Schweden liefern hochwertigen Melodic Metal mit starken Refrains ab. Gründungsmitglied und Gitarrist Mikael Dahl hatte zwischenzeitlich ja den Weg zurück ans Mikro gefunden, für „Chained“ haben sich die Jungs dann aber doch lieber für den Dänen Nico Adamsen entschieden. Der drückt den Songs auf jeden Fall den richtigen Stempel auf, und in dieser Besetzung prophezeie ich mal einen recht guten Erfolg für CRYSTAL EYES - vorausgesetzt allerdings, dass sich die Band noch weiter von den Vorbildern der 80er abheben kann, und zu etwas mehr Eigenständigkeit findet. Die ersten drei Tracks des Albums preschen ordentlich vorweg, und man kann fast jeden Song als wahren Ohrwurm bezeichnen. Egal ob die starke Metal-Hymne „Ride the Rainbow“ oder das etwas sperrigere „The Devil Inside“ – die Schweden darf man mit diesem Songmaterial im Gepäck auf keinen Fall mehr als „Underground“ abstempeln. In der gleichen Qualität geht es weiter, wobei „Lonely Ball of fate“ sicher der beste Track des Albums ist. Superstarke Harmonie im Refrain, ein tolles Solo und kompakter Sound machen das Teil zum Erlebnis. Zu kritisieren gibt`s höchstens, dass sich die Songs untereinander zu sehr gleichen, und hin und wieder vom Stil her wirklich sehr ähnlich klingen. Das schmälert aber nicht den Spaßfaktor von CRYSTAL EYES, auch wenn es hin und wieder etwas klischeehaft metallisch und zugegeben, eintönig, zugeht. Das fünfte Album der Melodic-Metaller solltet ihr auf jeden Fall antesten und kann fast schon als Geheimtipp für Melodic-Fans durchgehen. Alle Fans härterer Gangart machen bei der Riff-Packung von CRYSTAL EYES auf jeden Fall auch nichts verkehrt, sollten aber wissen, ob sie mit extrem melodischen Strukturen und dicken Chören klar kommen. Fazit: Ob das der Durchbruch wird? Starkes Album mit kompakten Songs, nicht zu viele, nicht zu wenige – So ganz langsam darf es dann aber doch etwas mehr Eigenständigkeit sein, wenn´s mit dem Erfolg noch was werden soll. BY: Shylock

“Chained” is th sixth album of the swedish group Crystal Eyes. The style of the group is an epic heavy/power metal. Nico Adamsen’s vocals are powerful, well at place and melodic with some Dio’s tones. He has a varied way of singing and knows to play well with his voice. The tracks are melodic and epic at the same time with a good twin guitars efficient and powerful and the soli, all being simple, are well at place and efficient. I like when the two guitars are playing in harmony, it sounds very old school and it does always do it !!! The songs have often choruses in the refrains but not only, the choruses are sometimes supporting Nico in some parts of the verses. The songs have varied rhythmics. The musicians are good and control their instruments. At the end Crystal Eyes gives us an excellent album and the group has an undeniable creative potential. “Chained” is an album that I recommend you without any restriction if you like this metal style. Mit "Chained" erblickt das mittlerweile fünfte Studiowerk der schwedischen Kombo CRYSTAL EYES nun das Licht der Welt. Und weil die Band gleich von Anfang zeigen möchte, wo der Hammer hängt, bekommt man mit "Ride The Rainbow" gleich mal einen ziemlich druckvollen Up-Tempo-Song um die Ohren geknallt. "The Devile Inside" rockt eingängig und geradlinig, daneben tummeln sich klassische Metal- Schlachtgesänge und Kampfhymnen wie "Waves Of War", "Fighting" und das mit ruhigem Beginn versehene und sich dann zur Metal-Hymne steigernde "Shadow Rider". Ob es sich bei dem Titel des Midtempo-Rockers "Dying In The Rain" um eine zufällige Ähnlichkeit oder vielleicht doch eher um eine gezielte Anspielung auf AHAs "Crying In The Rain" handelt, das zu entscheiden bleibt jedem selbst überlassen, fest steht jedenfalls, dass CRYSTAL EYES einen deutlich fetteren Background aufbieten als erstgenannte. Und zum Ausklang gibt´s mit "Guardian" noch eine hübsche Gitarren-Ballade obendrauf.. Mehr braucht das Melodic Metal- Herz eigentlich nicht, um glücklich zu sein. BY: Bianca Riessinger

Power Metal band CRYSTAL EYES would release a consistent run of impressively packaged demo cassettes upfront of their 1999 commercial debut 'World Of Black And Silver'. The band was put together in Borås during 1992 by ex-PAINTED SKIES vocalist/guitarist Mikael Dahl and guitarist Niclas Karlsson. The duo rounded off the line-up with bass player Christian Gunnarsson and a drum machine. In 1993 the band brought in a real drummer Martin Tilander to commit to tape a debut demo, 'Crystal Eyes', released in 1994. Also becoming involved was lyricist Andreas Götesson. In early 1995 the band splintered with Tilander and Karlsson pursuing another project FIERCE CONVICTION. Karlsson would later wind up as a member of Power Metal band ZONATA. Meantime CRYSTAL EYES regathered its strength by enrolling guitarist Jukka Kaupaamaa, bassist Kim Koivo and ex-DAMNATORY drummer Kujtim Gashi. The stability would not endure though as Koivo made his exit just prior to recording of a follow up demo, June 1996's 'The Shadowed Path'. He would be replaced by Marco Nicolaidis.January 1997 would witness the drafting of SUNRISE bass player Claes Wikander, and in March a third promotional tape 'The Final Sign' was recorded. Line-up ructions continued though as in October Kaupaamaa's position was taken by Jonathan Nyberg.CRYSTAL EYES would issue yet another demo, 'The Dragon's Lair', during the Spring of 1998. Media praise attracted the attention of the Crazy Life label who inked a deal with the band for their inaugural 'World Of Black And Silver' album. Recording took place in Germany during November with the album being shipped to stores in April of 1999. A second album, In Silence They March', followed in 2000. In January of that year CRYSTAL EYES put in a bout of touring on a package billing with LEFAY and EVERGREY. Stefan Svantesson of FRETERNIA would supplant Gashi, the former drummer being regrettably forced out due to an illness in his family. By June of 2002 Svantesson had cut his ties with FRETERNIA in order to concentrate his efforts on CRYSTAL EYES and their new album provisionally entitled 'Vengeance Descensing'. By coincidence, an ex-CRYSTAL EYES drummer, Martin Tilander, would fill Svantesson's vacancy in FRETERNIA. CRYSTAL EYES signed with the newly established Heavy Fidelity label, established by their management and booking agency DMP Sweden, to cut their third record 'Vengeance Descending'. The album saw guest contributions from ex-CHROMING ROSE frontman Gerd Salewski and LOST HORIZON singer Daniel Heiman. The album also saw issue in North America through Neoblast Records. The band, entering Los Angered Recordings together with producer Andy La Rocque, set 'Confessions Of The Maker' as the title of a new album for early 2005 release. For these sessions Daniel Heiman took over as lead vocalist. Meantime, the Heavy Fidelity label acquired the rights to CRYSTAL EYES' first brace of albums, 'World Of Black And Silver' and 'In Silence They March' for remastered re-issue. Dahl and ex-member Niclas Karlsson would also be operational with a JUDAS PRIEST tribute band. In December 2005 CRYSTAL EYES announced the addition of Danish singer Søren Nico Adamsen, of KILLER DOLLAR BABIES, FURY and STARRATS repute, to the group's ranks. In late March 2006 CRYSTAL EYES set to work on a new studio album, 'Dead City Dreaming', recording at their own studios with producer Fredrik Nordström. The band closed a nine year tenure with guitarist Jonathan Nyberg in August. Former band member Niclas Karlsson took his place. In 2007 Søren Nico Adamsen teamed up with Italian Progressive Metal band TWINSPIRITS, mentored by EMPTY TREMOR and KHYMERA guitar player Daniele Liverani. Søren Nico Adamsen bowed out in January 2009 and CRYSTAL EYES persevered with Mikael Dahl resuming lead vocal duties. Their latest effort show ,is the sixth for the Swedish quintet with the real traditional musical roots. In SCORPIONS, RAINBOW, ACCEPT, DIO, BLACK SABBATH,THIN LIZZY, RUNNING WILD, HELLOWEEN. All the mega brands of the 70s and 80s Who shaped our music. So why shall we bother? Well you should, cause unlike other claimers of the crown, these guys are right on the spot. They know how to deliver their music, well played and old timers heavy metal. Songs like the “The devil inside” and “Fighting” are seeking for the live approval/Along with bands like DIONYSUS, HAMMERFALL, PRETTY MAIDS, GRAVE DIGGER, LIONS SHARE, MORGANA LE FAY etc they are this not so respected b level of metal besides HAMMERFALL who got the commercial success. Yet these kind of bands create the metal feeling, fill in the bills at the festivals, remember that metal needs twin guitars and harmonies and write songs about breaking the chains of the everyday’s life. If you were after VICTORY and STEELER in the 80s or Axel Rudy Pell in the 90s and 00s these guys may sound dated, but…They got a real crunchy production, they remind of everything and nothing and they have real nice songs. If you are in to heavy metal, no genres or technical super heroes, the way it was raised at Europe at the middle of the 80s and mostly at Germany, Belgium, UK, These guys will make you feel happy and smile. I personally enjoyed it enough to listen to it a second time. Once we were young and this was our music, melodic, guitar driven and naïve…and we liked it. Remember early DIO, PICTURE, RODS, RAILWAY, ACCEPT, IRON MAIDEN, SAXON, SHIVA, SYRON VANES, HEAVY LOAD etc. If you need a dictionary to find out who these people are go and listen to your favorite corporate metal product. Sesto album per gli svedesi Crystal Eyes, band attiva dal 1999 e dedita ad un power metal di stampo germanico, con chiare influenze provenienti da Hammerfall e Running Wild ma che non disdegna esplorare il terreno dell'hard rock; questo "Chained" non brilla certo di originalità, ma è senza dubbio un discreto lavoro ben confezionato e ben suonato, che conferma le tendenze musicali del combo svedese e che mantiene la discografia della band su livelli più che positivi. Certo, se siete alla ricerca di nuove sonorità in ambito power, di una ventata di freschezza sulle sonorità che tanto amate, allora indirizzate le vostre attenzioni su altre proposte, ma se invece amate il power metal in tutto e per tutto, allora questa release non sfigurerà di certo nella vostra collezione. Già l'opener è un manifesto del power in stile Hammerfall, una song di facile presa accompagnata da un chorus da stadio come nella migliore tradizione del genere: i richiami alla band di Cans e soci è più che esplicito, ma la canzone si fa ascoltare e risulta più che piacevole; stesso impianto stilistico e stesso ritornello da stadio con la successiva "The Fire Of Hades", che però risulta più "cattiva" e meno stancante della precedente. Con "The Devil Inside" invece il registro cambia in un hard rock melodico che spezza la monotonia iniziale dell'album e dona quel tocco di diversità che rende la proposta più varia, pur mantenendosi dentro certi registri stilistici. L'album prosegue sulle coordinate del trittico iniziale, alternando brani più power come la maideniana "Shadow Rider" e "Waves Of War", di chiare influenze provenienti dai Runnig Wild, a song di chiara matrice hard rock come "The Devil Inside". I nostri però esplorano anche i territori delle ballad con "Dying In The Rain", classica power-ballad, e con la medievaleggiante "Guardian" che chiude in bellezza l'album. Niente da eccepire su quanto proposto dai Crystal Eyes, peccato però che pecchino in originalità: a conti fatti "Chained" è sì un album più che sufficiente, ma troppo debitore dei lavori di illustri colleghi. Take Judas Priest, Gamma Ray and Iron maiden, put it in a blender and the result is Crystal Eyes.They are around for about seven years and November 21th they will release their sixt studio album ‘’Chained’’.Never heard of them before which is weird because they write some quite good songs for example ‘’Ride the Rainbow’’ and ‘’The Fire of Hades’’ are well written songs.The other songs on the album are also good but for me they won’t reach that level of the first two songs anymore.If this is also the problem on the previous albums then I can understand why they are not so known as all the other bands I mentioned in the beginning of this review. So It’s good music especially the first two songs ‘’Ride the Rainbow’’ and ‘’The Fire of Hades’’ but they can’t reach that level throughout the rest of the album. BY: Metal Maniac

Nie znaczy to oczywiœcie, ¿e zespó³ przez blisko pó³torej dekady nagrywa³ i wykonywa³ na koncertach utwory instrumentalne, ale umówmy siê, ¿e Mikael Dahl – za³o¿yciel i g³ówny kompozytor zespo³u – o niebo lepiej gra na gitarze ni¿ œpiewa. Wprawdzie w miêdzyczasie grupie uda³o siê zwerbowaæ Daniela Heimana, który dopiero co opuœci³ formacjê Lost Horizon, ale ten ju¿ na pocz¹tku pracy nad „Confession of the Maker” zaznaczy³, ¿e weŸmie udzia³ w nagraniach tylko w charakterze muzyka sesyjnego i na dalsz¹ wspó³prace panowie z Crystal Eyes nie maj¹ co liczyæ. Ett av dom mer slitstarka metalbanden i vårat avlånga land måste vara boråsarna i Crystal Eyes som aldrig har fått det där riktigt stora genombrottet men som envist kämpat på och har sedan starten i början på nittiotalet släppt ifrån sig sex album. Karriären började med vindnabb power metal men har mer glidigt över till heavy-sidan inom genren och släpper nu med sin nya skiva "Chained" sitt kanske starkaste album så här långt. Bandet hämtar inspiration från 80-talets Tyskland där band som Helloween, Running Wild och Accept regerade en gång i tiden men det finns även gott Iron Maiden-melodier för att även kunna knyta den brittiska ön till bandets ljudbild. Ibland blir till och med influenserna så stora så det är svårt att höra skillnaden på original och kopia. Mina tankar förs i det fallet till "Waves of War" som med lätthet skulle kunna ingå på en Running Wild platta. Inget ont i det då jag gillar det skarpt!Ja som ni märker är det kanske inte så nyskapande detta men det är likt förbannat riktigt bra då bandet har lyckats skapa tillräckligt starka låtar som kan stå på egna ben och inte behöva luta sig mot sina äldre bröder. Sen har alltid bandets ledare och gitarrist Mikael Dahl haft en sjujäkla känsla för att få till medryckande melodier och minnesvärda refränger som man mer än gärna sjunger med i. För att inte tala om riffandet som kanske aldrig har varit bättre på en Crystal Eyes-platta! Dessutom så har dom rekryterat en lysande sångare i dansken Nico Adamsen (hans andra album med bandet) vars röst är varierad samt aldrig påfrestande och som passar perfekt in i bandets musik. Dock får Nico stå tillbaka på plattans starkaste spår, den avslutande och akustiska "Guardian" där Mikael Dahl gör comeback som sångare och levererar en stark insats. Crystal Eyes har än en gång imponerat på mig och då jag numera sällan lyssnar på "ny" melodiös åttiotalsmetall så känns "Chained" definitivt som en platta som kommer snurra mer än en gång till hemma hos mig. Om världen är endast lite rättvis så skulle Crystal Eyes åtnjuta mycket mera framgång och jag hoppas att det kan lossna för grabbarna nu för "Chained" är ett ruskigt starkt heavy metal-album. Crystal Eyes se formo en el año 1992 por Mikael Dahl y Niclas Karlsson, siguiendo claras referencias de las grandes bandas de Heavy Metal de los 80, tales como Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Accept, Iron Maiden etc. En esta época Crystal Eyes grabaron 4 demos no oficiales, las cuales posteriormente les servirían para que en 1996, crearan su propia web site. En 1998, un sello Alemán independiente, les ofrece un contrato más que interesante, para poder grabar su debut a nivel de LP, “World Of Black And Silver”, y en el año 2000, el estupendo “In Silence They March”. Pero en este mismo año, se empezaban a producir en el seno del grupo, grandes problemas, lo que provocó la ruptura con el sello Alemán independiente, para unirse al mercado Sueco, desde donde editaron su tercer álbum en estudio, “Vengeance Descending”, grabado en los estudios propios del grupo, y donde colaboró a las voces Daniel Heiman, el vocalista también de Lost Horizon. “Vengeance Descending”, recibió buenísimas críticas por parte de la prensa especializada lo que hizo, que ese mismo año estuvieran descargando en el Sweeden Rock Festival. Tras la exitosa actuación de Crystal Eyes en el Sweeden Rock del 2003, el grupo decidió volver a trabajar en un nuevo disco de estudio, bajo el nombre de “Confessions Of The Maker” editado en 2005. Este mismo año Crystal Eyes, volvieron a participar en el Sweeden Rock, pero inmediatamente después de este actuación, Daniel Heiman, decide abandonar la banda, y así empieza la búsqueda larga y constante de un nuevo vocalista para Crystal Eyes. Nico Adamsen sería el elegido para suplir a Heiman, y de esta manera editar “Dead City Dreaming”, el quinto álbum de los Alemanes. Así pues, Crystal Eyes, una banda ya veterana, que con “Chained” nos presentan un buen álbum de Power Melódico, donde una de las principales características a resaltar son el sonido, presentando una muy buena producción en todos los temas que lo forman, pero para que podáis haceros una idea de cómo suena “Chained”, pasare a destacar cada uno de las aspectos interesantes, de este nuevo trabajo de Crystal Eyes. “Chained” comienza con un trallazo, plagado de unas guitarras devastadoras, estoy hablando de “Ride The Rainbow”, una canción con mucha potencia, donde la desgarradora voz de Adamsen, destaca de manera sobresaliente. Es un tema ideal para abrir un disco de Heavy Metal. Con una línea muy similar a los Suecos Hammerfall, comenzando con unos riffs de bajo sugerentes, se abre paso a “The Fire Of Hades”, un tema con muchísimo ritmo, y con una base rítmica muy digna. La verdad es que ““The Fire Of Hades”, presenta muchas similitudes con el grupo que he nombrado anteriormente, eso si salvando las distancias. Con are you ready!! empieza otro tema, que posee una onda similar a “The Fire Of Hades”, se trata de “The Devil Inside”, y es que esa es la mayor pega que tiene “Chained”, demasiada linealidad en los temas que lo componen, deberían haber innovado más en el sonido. Con unas bases de Heavy Metal muy tópicas se nos presenta el siguiente corte, “Waves Of War”, un estribillo para nada elaborado y que desde lejos se puede intuir la temática de las letras de este tema….Llegando al ecuador de “Chained”, Crystal Eyes nos presentan una semibalada,” Dying In The Rain”, donde los cambios de ritmo son muy frecuentes, pero no logra enganchar para nada, ni mucho menos se convierte en un gran tema, le falta muchísimo trabajo sobre todo musicalmente hablando. Con más elaboración compositiva, se encuentra “Fighting”, un tema caracterizado por esos riffs cabalgantes, que la convierten posiblemente en uno de los mejores cortes de “Chained”, sin ser para nada espectacular, pero sí pegadiza. “Shadow Rider”, es otro de los temas típicos del Heavy Metal, con respecto a sus letras….diré que musicalmente, es una buena canción, pero con esa falta de innovación compositiva tan evidente. Se presiona el acelerador todavía más si cabe, en “Lonely Ball Of Fate”, un corte bastante rápido con un estribillo muy bueno y pegadizo. “Lonely Ball Of Fate”, es sin ninguna duda el tema más elaborado de “Chained”, aparte de poseer un solo de guitarra hacia mitad, sencillamente genial. Se cierra este nuevo trabajo de los ya míticos Crystal Eyes, con “Guardian”, un tema acústico muy bien interpretado y donde mejor se reconoce la calidad vocal de Adamsen, siendo acompañado durante el estribillo por unos coros excelentes. “Chained”, es un álbum que va de menos a más, y que sin ninguna duda si hubieran variado la temática de las letras e innovado en las bases rítmicas en determinadas canciones, se hubiera convertido en un trabajo a tener más en cuenta, quedándose de esta manera en un disco bueno sin más, y que para nada sobresale con respecto a otros trabajos del género. CRYSTAL EYES has been around for more than seven years; "Chained" is the sixth studio release by this Swedish quartet. OK, lots of hard work in the band we can see. Their first album via the Metal Heaven label is soon to be released and – for those aware of the band in prior – it’s good news CRYSTAL EYES still performs well-designed Heavy/Power Metal music. CRYSTAL EYES reminds me of a mix of ACCEPT, BRAINSTORM, RUNNING WILD, GAMMA RAY, JUDAS PRIEST and IRON MAIDEN. The production is solid, with a volume spewing out of the speakers in no fear. The mix is loud, the album is loud itself. You won’t notice any double-bass speedy tracks in "Chained". Still, the tempos are pounding and you won’t find any difficulty enjoying the in-your-face tracklist of this album. There’s tons of twin leads, plus choir vocal lines are present in the choruses. Still, you should not be mistaken; CRYSTAL EYES does not belong that much to the so-called ’happy’ Euro Power scene. More precisely, we should say that this band draws more ideas from classic Metal acts rather than ’teutonic’ ones, even if the final product does taste rather ’now happening’. The voice of Nico Adamnsen is crystal clear. He will not scream much, he’ll probably be more ’narrating’ in a Hansi Kursch style or driving a la Rock ’n’ Rolf. His vocals fit the music a lot, eventually. The musicians’ performance is really good, even if embodying enough cliches anyway; nothing irritating, at least. Most rhythm parts are straightforward, there’s enough room for twin leads (as pre-said) and – along with some typically good rhythm section – the total summary is for the benefit of the band. CRYSTAL EYES is a really capable band. Don’t know if it’s a matter of timing or promotion or simply bad luck that they have not been more widely known. "Chained" comes to - once again – verify this quintet has the potential to attract the interest of today’s European Heavy/Power Metal fans. Recommended? Yes. BY: Grigoris

Die Schweden von Crystal Eyes sind schon einige Jahre aktiv und haben auch schon mehrere Alben veröffentlicht. Der Fünfer startet Chained mit Ride The Rainbow, einem Riff-basierten Rocker. Vom Riffing her erinnert es etwas an Accept... Und irgendwie beleben die Schweden den Sound der frühen bis Mitt-80er Jahre wieder, es finden sich auch Einflüsse von Iron Maiden und Judas Priest im Sound von Crystal Eyes. Sänger Nico Adamsen macht einen guten Job, auch wenn ich manchmal etwas die Power vermisse. Schnell wird klar, das die Jungs nicht versuchen etwas Neues zu erfinden, sondern einfach ihren Spass am 80er-Jahre Heavy Metal haben und daran ihn zu spielen. Deswegen sollten Fans des 80er-Jahre Heavy Metal auch Gefallen finden an dem Album! Bei The Fire Of Hades steht der Gesang im Vordergrund, aber es passt so schon. Abgesehen von den harten Ruffs, gibt es noch einen kurzen Solo-Part, der auch sehr melodisch geraten ist - wie die Gesangslinie. Dann stoppt man abrupt und es geht weiter mit akustischer Gitarre und Gesang, aber dann geben sie wieder Gas. Gesanglich erinnert mich der Track etwas an Andy B. Franck (Brainstorm, Symphorce).... Etwas härter gehen sie zur Sache bei The Devil Inside, aber der Song rockt auch und hat einen 70er-Jahre Touch. Der Refrain geht ins Ohr und schnell erwischt man sich beim Mitsingen. Waves Of War ist ein Piraten-Song und wer jetzt an Running Wild denkt, liegt gar nicht so falsch. Balladeske beginnt Dying In The Rain, wird dann aber zu einem Mid-Tempo Rocker. Sänger Nico Adamsen hat eine gute Stimme und hier klingt er teilweise leicht aggressiv, aber ich vermisse ein bischen die Intensität... die Emotionen. Ein Accept-mässiger Rocker ist Fighting, der schnelle Song ist sogar noch einen Tacken aggressiver als der vorherige Track. Zum Abschluss gibt es eine Ballade mit akustischen Gitarren und einem leicht epischen Touch, fast ein wenig hymnisch. Ein guter Song um das Album ausklingen zu lassen. Okay, die Schweden bringen nichts neues, aber sie widmen sich dem, was ihnen Spass macht, dem Heavy Metal der 80er Jahre. Jeder, der den 80er Heavy Metal für altmodisch hält ist bei Crystal Eyes fehl am Platz, aber wer seine alten 80er Scheiben immer noch hört, der sollte hier mal reinhören! BY: Claudia

Die Schweden bzw. Dänen (Sänger Nico Adamsen ist Däne) von CRYSTAL EYES spielen waschechten Heavy Metal und haben im November bereits ihr sechstes Album "Chained" veröffentlicht. Bereits beim ersten Hören fällt auf, dass einem sehr viel irgendwie bekannt vorkommt. Das soll aber noch nichts grundsätzlich Negatives bedeuten, weil die Band das sehr geschickt macht. Man bedient sich der bekannten Metalzutaten wie präzisen Gitarrenriffs, kraftvollem Gesang, treibenden Schlagzeugrhythmen (teilweise mit schöner Doublebass) sowie virtuosen, mal schnellen, mal gefühlvollen Gitarrensoli und schafft daraus Songs, die schnell ins Ohr gehen. Dabei kommen einen öfters Gedanken an Genregrößen wie beispielsweise SAXON, HAMMERFALL, DIO oder auch ACCEPT. Allerdings nicht durchgehend, sondern eben nur an einigen Stellen. CRYSTAL EYES bewegen sich auf dem schmalen Grad zwischen deutlicher Inspiration und purem Abkupfern. Überwiegend schaffen sie es aber, diesen zu meistern und eigenständige Songs zu schreiben anstatt nur Ansammlungen von zusammengeschusterten Zitaten. Weiterhin greift man in einigen Songs gefühlvoll auf die Akustikgitarre zurück, was eigenständige Farbtupfer schafft, wie im Midtempostück "The Fires Of Hades". Die einzelnen Bandmitglieder beherrschen ihre Instrumente und Sänger Nico klingt nicht zu hoch sowie abwechslungsreich. Der Kerl erinnert mich grob an Chris Bay von FREEDOM CALL. In einigen Songs schimmern die Vorbilder vielleicht etwas zu sehr durch, z. B. in den schnellen Stücken "Fighting" (klingt wie HAMMERFALL) und "Waves Of War" (wie RUNNING WILD). Der Letztgenannte geht auch textlich in die Richtung der zitierten Band ("... The Sign Of Jolly Roger..."), sodass man hier den Eindruck hat, Rock'n'Rolf grinst hinter seinem Segel durch die Boxen. Abgeschlossen wird das Album durch die Akustikballade "Guardian", die nicht nur wegen dem Titel Erinnerungen an eine Band aus Krefeld weckt. Insgesamt ein nettes Album, das zwar nicht sonderlich innovativ klingt, aber trotzdem Spaß macht und doch irgendwo seine eigene Richtung hat. BY: Thorsten Schwalbach

Oyez, Oyez ! Amateurs nostalgiques des premiers Edguy, braves guerriers ralliés à la cause métallique d'Hammerfall ou de Blind Guardian... levez-vous, le combat va commencer !!!
Sous couvert de ce sixième opus, les suédois de Crystal Eyes vont enchaîner les poncifs d'un Heavy mélodique épique condamné à mort par la populace. Il va falloir faire front, s'armer d'une volonté sans faille, d'un courage sans limite pour affirmer haut et fort que cet album est tout simplement EXCELLENT !!! Ça y est, j'entrevois déjà le détracteur et son sourire cynique faisant face en pointant du doigts le manque d'originalité de ce "Chained" aux intonations trop convenues. Pourtant, je suis prête à contrecarrer les coups les plus rudes tant ce combo a su trouver de suite chez moi un écho favorable... musicalement tout d'abord, les cavalcades de notes répondant aux riffs plombés, les soli de six cordes se posant sur des mélodies envoûtantes et variées, le tout sous couvert d'une production irréprochable et très... scandinave. C'est ensuite émotionnellement que "Chained" fait petit à petit son œuvre en vous transportant au coeur d'un monde peuplé des fantômes de Tobias Sammet ( "The fire of Hades", "The Devil inside") ou de ses compatriotes de Hammerfall tant sur l'approche rythmiques ( "Ride the rainbow", le speedé "Fighting", les intonations vocales d'un "Lonely Ball of Fate") que sur les moments d'accalmie avec un "Guardian" très proche d'un "Glory to the brave". L'aspect moyenâgeux m'amenant avec un plaisir certain dans des contrées jadis foulées par les troubadours de la bande à Hansi Kürsch ( l'épique " Waves of War"). On pourrait bien sûr crier au plagiat parfois mais le tout est joué avec une telle sincérité, le chant sublimant par son approche à la fois rageuse et narrative les morceaux, qu'on entre très facilement dans l'univers de Crystal Eyes. Si on y regarde de plus près, sans se voiler la face, il faut aussi dire que les opus des groupes sus cités ont un tantinet laissé sur leur faim l'amateur de Heavy ces dernières années, laissant s'essouffler au fil des albums la magie première qui fait la force de ce style fédérateur. Face à ce constat, Crystal Eyes ne fait certes pas dans le surprenant, mais il apporte cette touche de fraîcheur et de passion qu'il manque aujourd'hui aux autres groupes qui ont perdu en spontanéité ce qu'ils ont gagné en maturité. Oui, "Chained" est un excellent album qui comblera les amateurs de Metal guerrier et de Heavy mélodique. J'ai sincèrement apprécié ce moment passé aux côtés de Crystal Eyes, à la fois nostalgique et pleine d'espoir pour ce genre souvent à tort décrié... j'en redemande même... pourquoi devrais-je avoir honte de le dire ??? The band Crystal Eyes is back with his new album, the sixth of the band's career. At the beginning of his career, the Crystal Eyes sounded almost like a copy of Gamma Ray, including the vocals of Mikael Dahl are well-style Kai Hansen. Until the previous album "Dead City Dreaming", Mikael decided it was time to leave the vocals and just stay with the guitar and seek a new singer, the voice was in charge of Daniel Heiman (ex-Lost Horizon) only as a guest , Maybe for a little distance (at least in voice) of its greatest influence, the Gamma Ray. Evolution does very well, and did very well for Crystal Eyes with the entry of new vocalist, giving more energy, aggressiveness and attitude than before, soando less sickening, even more so in the case of a power metal band. The voice of Nico Adamsen are melodic, but he also knows to use a voice more aggressive when the music calls such vocalization. I can say that the band hit flush with the new vocalist, and even the music sounds better now, and to a certain weight at certain points was very welcome. Of course, we still have all the cliches of style, the famous duets a la Iron Maiden, harmonies to the Gamma Ray, but everything sounds more mature than before. In "Ride the Rainbow" we have as a gummy chorus and was to be expected, a great song. In "The Devil Inside", I could see a slight influence (and mild) of hard rock, perhaps because the characteristics of the new vocalist. What else like this album, which differs somewhat from earlier work, is that the songs are more cadence, nothing of double bass drum of battery all the time, certainly was a good thing. The band is now more Nocturnal Rites for a more melodic, I think is a good comparison. Bewährtes Hörfutter aus dem Hause CRYSTAL EYES: Klassischer Heavy Metal mit Niveau und schönen Melodien! Eigentlich ist es ja eher die Trotzreaktionen eines gefrusteten Kritikers, der sich allein auf weiter Flur mit seinen Vorlieben fühlt, wenn er eine Band als "unterbewertet" bezeichnet. Ob das auf mich und CRYSTAL EYES zutrifft, lassen wir doch einfach mal dahin gestellt. Ich bin jedenfalls der Ansicht, dass diese schwedische Formation um Gitarrist und Mastermind Mikael Dahl deutlich mehr Aufmerksamkeit und Wohlwollen verdient hätte. Zugegeben: Was es auf den fünf Alben von "World Of Black And Silver" (1999) bis zu "Dead City Dreaming" (2006)" zu hören gab, war nicht sonderlich innovativ oder wegweisend. Aber manchmal will ich auch einfach "nur" blitzsauber komponierten, klassischen Heavy Metal mit wohlig schnurrenden Riffs und schönen, eingängigen Melodien hören. Eigentlich liegen Fans von HAMMERFALL und deren Inspirationsquelle, nämlich der heiligen Trinität aus PRIEST, ACCEPT und MAIDEN, bei keinem der CRYSTAL EYES-Werke falsch. Man sollte halt zudem eine Vorliebe für etwas unterkomplexe, zart schmelzende Hooklines haben. All das trifft auch auf die neue CD "Chained" zu: traditionelle, fein ausgearbeitete Songstrukturen, exzellentes Handwerk, hymnische Melodien und liebevoll aufbereiteter Metal-Kitsch im positivsten Sinne des Wortes erwarten die Liebhaber. Klangtechnisch veredelt vom fast schon unvermeidlichen Fredrik Nordström ist auch diese Platte ein runde, schlüssige Angelegenheit geworden. Neu ist lediglich, dass mit Paul Pettersson ein frischer Gitarrist an Bord gekommen ist und "Chained" nicht mehr bei Mikael Dahls eigenem Label Heavy Fidelity, sondern bei Metal Heaven erscheint. Was die Qualität der Kompositionen angeht, erreicht auch dieses Album nicht ganz das Niveau des bisherigen Opus Magnum "Vengeance Descending", kann es aber mit "Dead City Dreaming" und "Confessions Of The Maker" durchaus aufnehmen. Die besten Songs konzentrieren sich wie so oft am Anfang der Scheibe: Da hätten wir zum Einstieg zunächst einmal die typisch skandinavische Uptempo-Hymne 'Ride The Rainbow', dann den feierlichen Stampfer 'The Fire Of Hades', den knackigen Heavy-Rocker 'The Devil Inside' sowie als absolutes Highlight 'Waves Of War', das mit "Bark At The Moon"-Strophe und "Glory To The Brave"-Chorus alle Neune abräumt. Danach verflacht "Chained" ein klein wenig, bleibt aber stets UEFA-Cup-tauglich. Hervorheben sollte man vielleicht noch das mit grandiosen, in THIN LIZZY-Gewässern fischenden Twin-Leads und herrlich pathetischem Chorus punktende 'Shadow Rider'. Summa summarum: Mit "Chained" reihen CRYSTAL EYES eine weiteres, zwischen gut und sehr gut schwankendes Album in ihre Diskographie ein. Kreative Berge versetzt diese CD nicht, sie macht aber schlicht und ergreifend eine Menge Spaß. Wer auf die genannten Referenzbands steht, sollte unbedingt mal ein Ohr riskieren. Crystal Eyes fra Sverige blev dannet helt tilbage i 1992, men det var først i det herrens år 1999, at debutpladen ”World Of black And Silver” så dagens lys. Nævnte udspil er så også det eneste bekendtskab, jeg har haft med bandet; jeg ejer ikke pladen, men husker den som værende pænt kedelig og på det jævne. Der skete så det, at danske Nico Adamsen tiltrådte som ny sanger på bandets forrige album, ”Dead City Dreaming”, hvilket skulle vise at være et særdeles fornuftigt valg – jeg kender ikke skiven, men han gør det sgu godt her på bandets 6. album ”Chained”. Crystal Eyes henter deres inspiration i gode gamle heavy metal-bands som Accept, Iron maiden og Judas priest, hvilket de bestemt ikke lægger skjul på, og til tider bliver det sgu næsten for meget. Tag nu f.eks ”The Fire Of Hades”…hvem sagde Accept? Eller hvad med det fede ”Shadow Rider”? Tja, det kunne lige så godt være skrevet af Iron Maiden med de flotte guitarharmonier, der bliver leveret her. Når det så er sagt, kan helheden godt virke lidt halvkedelig ved første gennemlytning, men hvis man giver den en chance, dukker der faktisk nogle ret velskrevne og gode melodier frem af busken, hvor i særdeleshed Nico Adamsen gør en glimrende figur – han passer simpelthen perfekt til denne musik, og han er virkelig med til at højne kvaliteten af dette udspil. Så er man til heavy metal – ganske vist temmelig ordinær, ej heller særlig original men derimod utrolig velspillet med en fantastisk flot vokal – ja, så går man ikke helt galt i byen her. Det skal lige nævnes, at Nico Adamsen jo også skal synge på danske Artillery’s næste album, og det bliver spændende at høre, om han kan løfte arven efter Flemming Rønsdorf. BY: Allan

Strange but true: almost anything I wrote in my review of Cryonic Temple’s “Immortal” (see elsewhere) goes for this “Chained” from Crystal Eyes as well. Both are Swedish bands that have been digged up by Georg Siegl’s Metal Heaven after having released a string of albums most people (at least from this here site) won’t have heard of. That I like Crystal Eyes a bit more than Cryonic Temple though, has to do with their style of metal. What I hear, is pure melodic metal (without too many influences) and as a whole this “Chained” sounds more cohesive than CT’s “Immortal”. That’s why it deserves four stars from yours truly, even though it’s still nothing earth-shaking! BY:

CRYSTAL EYES es una banda que ha demostrado su solidez a base de trabajo sin descanso. Comenzando con sus demos a partir de 1994 y siendo su primer disco de 1999, los suecos han sido siempre fieles al Power Metal de melodías felices y su tradicional producción "raspadilla", ya llevan seis álbumes en estudio con el presente "Chained". No puedo ocultar mi debilidad por la música del guitarrista Mikael Dahl. Desde que escuché "Gods Of The World" y "Time Flight" en sendos recopilatorios de revistas españolas de Heavy Metal, a modo de promoción de sus primeros discos, me quedé prendado por su gancho. Sin haber sido nunca un puntal visible de la escena europea y encima arrastrando producciones muy mejorables, CRYSTAL EYES ha sabido salir triunfante en los peores momentos de la escena, principalmente debidos a la saturación de bandas y a la baja calidad de muchas de ellas. Amontonando sus ya tradicionales influencias como JUDAS PRIEST o IRON MAIDEN, y especialmente aquellas heredadas la escena alemana como HELLOWEEN y RUNNING WILD (evidentes en la impresionante "Waves Of War") y otras grandes bandas menos conocidas como pudieran ser CHROMING ROSE, SCANNER o HEAVENS GATE, han seguido un camino muy recto desde sus inicios. Y así continúan en "Chained". En esta ocasión, y potenciando un poco más el paso adelante que dieron con su anterior trabajo "Dead City Dreaming", han agregado un puntito más de pesadez a las guitarras rítmicas. De este modo este disco no es exactamente lo mismo que grabaron hace ya 10 años. Ahora suena todo más compacto, más a Heavy Metal clásico que al Power Metal rápido y dinámico que les ha caracterizado siempre, aunque sus estructuras siguen siendo semejantes y las diferencias son meros matices. Entre temas como "Ride The Rainbow", "The Fire Of Hades" o "Lonely Ball Of Fate" se pueden encontrar cosas más chocantes como "Fighting" o "Shadow Rider", que no se ajustan del todo a los esquemas más tradicionales de esta banda, pero no pierde en ningún momento la esencia básica esta banda impone desde siempre: la senda del Heavy Metal sin concesiones. En cuanto a la formación, cabe destacar que Nico Adamsen continúa como vocalista de CRYSTAL EYES, además de compaginar su faceta Thrash Metal junto a ARTILLERY. Este muchacho ha sido todo un descubrimiento y su voz encaja como un guante en las composiciones de los suecos. Por su parte el guitarrista Mikael Dahl ha vuelto a poner voz a un tema, de nuevo una balada. Con su actual cantante este grupo va sobrado, pero el líder de la banda siempre gusta de cantar algún tema en sus discos (recordemos que los tres primeros fueron cantados íntegramente por él). Así la emotiva "Guardian" pone el broche final al trabajo. Con "Chained" CRYSTAL EYES ha demostrado el triunfo del esfuerzo permanente. Si bien no saldrán a tocar fuera de su país en muchas ocasiones ni serán un referente para la mayoría de la gente, estos suecos han labrado una trayectoria consistente plagada de trabajos notables. Crystal Eyes are a metal band from Sweden, and "Chained" is their sixth album. I don't think I've heard any of their previous albums, and because of that I wasn't really looking forward to reviewing this album. If their previous albums had been any good, surely I would have heard the buzz, right? Not necessarily of course, since the band's previous albums have been released on a smaller label, and they may not have been promoted that heavily. And to be honest, with the number of albums released each year, some just do not get the attention they deserve. I hope that "Chained" does, as it's a very decent metal album! The anthemic, Hammerfall-like "Ride The Rainbow" takes no prisoners, and proves instantly that Crystal Eyes are not your "thirteen in a dozen" metal band. They aren't the world's most original band, but that doesn't really matter, because their melodic metal is very enjoyable. Superb twin guitar attack, driving rhythm section and excellent vocalist is a good foundation for a metal band, and with good songs, they can't really go wrong. The slower and heavier "The Fire Of Hades" reminds me of Hammerfall again, but "The Devil Inside" is something different. The straight-forward opening riff and vocalist Nico Adamsen's opening scream had me thinking of Lordi, and what they might sound like with a real vocalist. The brilliant chorus only added to that "vision", and I must say I like it. I might add that the song has a bit of an Accept-vibe to it too. The next song that stands out is the hard rocking "Fighting", which has a definite German Metal sound to it. I'm thinking of a hybrid of Accept, Scorpions and Bonfire here. Another song that I have to mention is "Lonely Ball Of Fate", which is blessed with a very Edguy-like, catchy chorus. The remaining songs aren't too bad either, so this is a pretty safe purchase for anyone into melodic metal. It surely goes to my A-list of releases of 2008. BY: Kimmo Toivonen

Sexto disco de esta formación sueca, veterana ya en estas lides que, para quien no les conozca, les diremos que ha contado con Daniel Heiman (Lost Horizon) en sus filas. Bueno, Heiman ya no está y éste es el segundo álbum en que Soren Nico Adamsen ejerce de vocalistas. Seguramente a la mayoría os sonará a chino pero en su currículum están bandas como Twinspirts, Artillery o Starrats que personalmente os recomiendo. Aunque, lo curioso del caso es que estas dos formaciones hacían hard rock y Crystal Eyes practican power metal melódico aunque esto no quita para que el señor Adamsen se siga saliendo (aunque, conociendo mis gustos, no hace falta decir cómo lo prefiero, ¿no?). Así, "Ride the rainbow" es la primera muestra este nuevo registro, con un ritmo atronador en que destaca la contundencia de la batería, aunque eso no se traduce en una velocidad endiablada constante, ya que el verso combina pasajes relajados con otros más enérgicos y el estribillo se muestra más grandilocuente, con cierta dosis de épica, recordando a Gamma Ray aunque combinando también aires de Helloween y Maiden. "The fire of Hades" es más pausada, dibujando un buen andante en que el bajo y la voz limpia de Adamsen ganan en presencia, incrementando paulatinamente la intensidad hasta desembocar en un estribillo coral, mucho más robusto y, de nuevo, épico; para, al final del tema, ofrecer un pasado baladístico que bien puede recordar a los Scorpions. "The devil inside" también nos brinda sabor a clásico, en este caso a los Accept más rockeros, especialmente en su inicio, en el tratamiento de las guitarras, en el meloso estribillo e, incluso, en el solo. Es decir, en todos los elementos de la pieza a excepción de un verso algo extraño pero que no entorpece el buen desaroollo del tema. "Waves of war", en cambio, vuelve a apostar por la pomposidad y la épica y lo hace desde sus primeros pasos, ya con el estribillo, para luego volcarse en un verso acelerado pero igualmente barroco, dando lugar a un corte con cierto regusto a unos primigenios Blind Guardian. "Dying in the rain" se aparta un poco de la línea del disco, mostrando un tono más oscuro, con ecos de un hard rock de corte más clásico a lo Rainbow aunque con un matiz bastante heavy y algo épico, de nuevo, recordando a Gamma Ray aunque mucho más orientado a ese aire bombástico que presentaba el Dio de sus primeros discos en solitario. "Fighting" vuelve a moverse entre el hard rock y el heavy metal, de nuevo con esa marca génerica de la Europa central en cuanto a sonido, envolviendo un ritmo ágil pero no excesivamente rápido, bien culminado con un estribillo típico pero tremendamente efectivo. "Shadow rider" arranca de forma pausada, algo oscura, para pronto acelerar su paso y depositar su peso en las guitarras para dibujar una pieza con cierta dosis de épica y belleza pero algo repetitiva pues su culminación llega demasiado tarde. "Lonely ball of fate" pasa por ser más ágil, con un verso bastante agresivo que se ve frenado por un estribillo mucho más melódico y preciosista, recordándonos a los Edguy de sus primeros discos. Tras ella, el álbum llega a su fin con "Guardian" y, a juzgar por el título del tema y por su línea compositiva, parece un homenaje en toda regla a las composiciones más "medievales" de Blind Guardian pues comparten con el grupo teutón esa calidez acústica de temas como "Lord of the rings" o "The Bard's song". En fin, como podéis imaginar tras lo leído, se trata de un disco que no tiene nada de original pero que hará las delicias de todo aquel seguidor del metal centroeuropeo pues las influencias son diversas (y las comparaciones odiosas) pero casi todas atañen a grupos de esa localización geográfica. De hecho, se trata de un disco muy ameno, que sí es cierto que va de más a menos pero que en ningún momento se hace pesado y ofrece buenos y grandes momentos. Aunque, eso sí, dudo que estando tan a la sombra de otras bandas y mostrándose tan impersonales lleguen a alcanzar demasiado reconocimiento aunque no se les puede discutir que lo que hacen, lo hacen bien pero, ¿será suficiente? 8 / 10. Schweden im Jahr 1992. Die Band Crystal Eyes wird von Mikael Dahl und Niclas Karlsson gegründet. Eigentlich nur aus dem Beweggrund heraus, den geliebten Metal der achtziger Jahre im Stile von Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath oder Accept am Leben zu erhalten, was in der Hochphase des Grunge gar kein so leichtes Unterfangen zu sein schien. 1999 kam es dann zur Veröffentlichung des Debüt-Albums "World Of Black And Silver" bei einem deutschen Label. Seither spielt die Band jahraus, jahrein ein Album nach dem anderen ein und wird nicht müde, so viele Shows wie irgend möglich zu zocken. Zwischendurch wurden währenddessen auch immer wieder mal Redaktions-Stopps bei RockTimes eingelegt, die meiner geschätzten Kollegin Ilka die Gelegenheit gaben, die beiden Vorgänger-Alben Confessions Of The Maker und Dead City Dreaming ausführlich vorzustellen. Crystal Eyes stehen für traditionellen Metal, der sich aber gerne auch mal an kräftigem Hardrock der Marke Rainbow (in den siebziger Jahren) bedient. Kraftvolles, melodisches Songwriting und eingängiger Gesang bestimmen das Bild. Somit geht man offensichtlich den Weg des Vorgänger-Albums weiter. Sehr vorteilhaft für die Band ist auch die Tatsache, dass man schon lange nicht mehr grün hinter den Ohren ist und mit "Chained" bereits das sechste Album der Karriere vorlegen kann. In der klassischen Metal-Besetzung mit zwei Gitarren, Bass, Schlagzeug und Gesang legen die vier Schweden und der dänische Sänger Nico Adamsen nun also neun brandneue Granaten vor. Bereits der Opener "Ride The Rainbow" legt mächtig los und beweist, dass Power keineswegs immer mit übertriebener Schnelligkeit gleichzusetzen ist. Besonders prägend setzt der Frontmann Adamsen hier seine Kopfstimme als Melodie-Instrument ein, was der Geschichte einen tollen atmosphärischen Farbtupfer verleiht. Der meiner Meinung nach beste Song des Albums nennt sich "The Fire Of Hades", bei dem mit einem tollen Arrangement, wuchtigen Riffs und einem sehr geilen Refrain aufgefahren wird. Obwohl Crystal Eyes hier nie in Überschall-Geschwindigkeiten verfallen, wird doch klar, dass die Band bei den fetzigen Metal- bzw. Hardrock-Stücken eher zu Hause ist, als bei den ruhigeren Titeln. Namentlich kann man das zum Beispiel an "Dying In The Rain" oder auch "Guardian" festmachen, die zwar ganz nett sind, aber qualitativ nicht mit den Highlights von "Chained" mithalten können. Neben den bereits erwähnten beiden Eröffnungstiteln können dagegen "The Devil Inside", "Waves Of War" (sehr stark) oder auch "Fighting" wesentlich eindringlicher punkten. "Fighting" glänzt einmal mehr mit einer sehr effektiv eingesetzten Kopfstimme, während "Shadow Rider" unter anderem mit Twin-Gitarren punkten kann. "Lonely Ball Of Fate", wenn auch nicht der beste Song der Scheibe, kann einmal mehr mit den Doppel-Äxten, hier eher im Iron Maiden-Stil, überzeugen. Insgesamt ist das schon ein überzeugendes Stück Musik, was die Jungs von Crystal Eyes abgeliefert haben. Wer unbedingt mag, der darf natürlich auch wieder die Diskussionen um Innovation und Einzigartigkeit lostreten, aber meiner Meinung nach sollte man sich manchmal auch einfach nur auf seine vier Buchstaben setzen und Spaß haben. Der ist mit "Chained" nämlich fett am Start. Es ist natürlich nicht alles Gold, was glänzt, aber dieser Silberling kann sich durchaus, trotz einiger Schwachpunkte, von der Masse absetzen. Hmm, okay, die Produktion der Vocals ist da bei einigen Songs nicht unbedingt meine Kragenweite, aber das mag auch nur mein ganz persönlicher Geschmack sein. Bezüglich des Songwritings sind die Jungs auf einem richtig guten Weg, der ganz offensichtlich sogar noch Potenzial nach oben hat, da "Chained" erneut eine Steigerung zu sein scheint. Crystal Eyes fahren mit "Chained" 7,25 von 10 RockTimes-Uhren ein und legen ein sehr gutes, abgeklärtes wie auch mitreißendes Album vor. Das macht richtig Laune. BY: Markus Kerren

Die Jungs haben es leider nie geschafft, aus dem �berm�chtigen Schatten ihrer Landsleute von Hammerfall hervorzutreten. Mit der neuen Scheibe k�nnte man aber wieder etwas Boden gut machen. Musikalisch geht man straffer bzw. weitaus weniger hymnisch zu Werke. Das soll jetzt kein Kritikpunkt sein. Nicht jeder schwedische Act muss nach Hammerfall klingen. W�re ja langweilig! Los geht's mit Ride the Rainbow, ein passender Einstieg mit sehr eing�ngigen Refrain. Ebenfalls gelungen sind Waves of War sowie Shadow Rider. F�r Balladenfans gibt es auch ein Schmankerl in Form von Guardian. Spielerisch hat es die Band allemal drauf, allerdings fehlt ein richtiger �bersong. Insgesamt ein gutes Album, trotzdem werden die Jungs auch diesmal wohl nur ein Mauerbl�mchendasein fristen. Bis zu Hammerfall ist es noch ein gutes St�ck. Also, packen wir es an! BY: Glau

Non sono qui tra noi per fare una rivoluzione, gli svedesi Crystal Eyes, anzi il loro sound è quanto di più conforme ai canoni della tradizione sia oggi possibile trovare su piazza. La matrice scandinava è ben presente in una struttura dei brani molto classica (strofa/ritornello/variazione/assolo) e in certe melodie facili ma non troppo scontate, canticchiabili ma non troppo ‘happy’; qualsiasi cosa ne pensiate, non si va lontano dal sentiero tracciato da Nocturnal Rites ed Hammerfall. Volendo ancor più risalire, non vi è dubbio che il modello teutonico dei primi Helloween è importante per comprendere le evoluzioni dei 5 musicisti, così come l’onnipresente ombra degli Iron Maiden, particolarmente (ma piacevolmente) ingombrante per ciò che concerne le divagazioni strumentali e le parti di chitarra solista che innervano i brani. La cosa che sorprende è che i Crystal Eyes, dopo anni passati nel sottobosco senza lasciare traccia di sé, abbiano tenuto duro, superato le avversità e siano stati in grado di far uscire, oggi che queste sonorità non sono più così in auge, un disco più che soddisfacente. Bravi ragazzi, tenete duro e andate avanti così: i true metallers vi apprezzeranno e, quando l’heavy/power sarà di nuovo la moda del momento, si ricorderanno di chi non ha abiurato nei momenti di bassa marea. Was machen die Jungs nur falsch? Seit 1992 treiben die Schweden ihr Unwesen im Metal Wald. Mit dieser Scheibe bringen sie nun ihr 5. Machwerk unter die Leute. 9 richtig True Heavy Metal Stücke! Und trotzdem wird ihnen auch diesmal der Erfolg versagt bleiben. Warum? Zunächst ist die Frage gar nicht so einfach zu beantworten, weil die Songs gar nicht mal schlecht sind. Schon beim ersten Hören fällt mir „Waves of War“ auf! Ein richtig geiler Song, der an eine Running Wild Hymne der Glanztage der Hamburger heranreicht! Der Song animiert grade zu zum Mitsingen (ich hoffe die Truppe mal im Vorprogramm von irgendeiner glanzvollen Band zu sehen). Auch der Song davor „Devil Inside“ erinnert an die Highlights einer bekannten deutschen Kombo. Na, standen hier die alten Accept Pate? Und so geht es die ganze Scheibe durch. Hier hat man da Gefühl ein wenig alte Stormwitch zu hören, an der anderen Stelle klingen alte Blind Guardian durch. Ab und an mal ein Touch Judas Priest. Da müsste doch jedes Metal Herz höher schlagen! Und das tut es auch, so lange man Traditionalist ist! Dann und nur dann schlägt die Scheibe ein und es macht nicht so viel aus, dass Chaind die Originalität fehlt. Die Songs treten zwar gewaltig Arsch, aber man erkennt nur in wenigen Fällen Crystal Eyes wieder. Der Gesang ist 08/15 Melodic Metal Gesang, der leider völlig austauschbar ist.Die Melodien und Solos sind schön, aber leider nicht so packend das sie an die Großen der Szene heranreichen. Vielleicht auch, weil man sich bis auf die Ballade (mal wieder schön schmalzig kitschig) immer im Mid-Tempo Bereich aufhält. Irgendwie klingt „Chained“ wie eine Reise durch die Bands der 80’er in einem Sound aus dem Jahr 2008. Ich hab ja was für traditionelles Altmetall über und genau das ist der Punkt, wenn man sich „Chained“ zulegen möchte! BY: Frank

La Suède, plus connue dans notre milieu métallique pour nous avoir donné les joyaux du death metal « à l’ Européenne », a réussi à accoucher de quelques perles de pur heavy metal. Du bon vieux heavy comme on l’aime, avec des cavalcades épiques de guitares bien grasses, une section basse batterie carrée au son bien rond, un chanteur puissant sachant aussi bien nous titiller l’ouie de ses montées dans les aigus que dans les descentes plus graves, histoire de paraître bien méchant … Cette petite description un rien parodique vous fera sûrement penser aux maîtres du genre, les fameux Hammerfall, une bande de suédois ayant il y a quelques années remis au goût du jour ce genre un peu vieillissant, créant de par la même un courant que nos valeureux journalistes n’ont pas traîné à baptiser « true Heavy Metal » (faudra quand même qu’on me fasse découvrir un jour le « false heavy metal »…). Et bien aujourd’hui nous allons nous pencher sur un de leurs dauphins, Crystal Eyes qui ont devancé de quelques mois leur chef de file dans le calendrier des sorties. Chained est déjà le sixième album des cinq de Borås, dans la région de Göteborg, ville bien connue des métallos comme étant le creuset européen du death metal. Dans le cas qui nous intéresse, point de blast ou de sinistres grognements, mais 8 titres d’un heavy metal inspiré et très bien ficelé. Les titres s ‘enchaînent comme des perles sans aucun temps mort et réussissent à capter l’attention de l’auditeur par leur variété ne conférant pas à l’ensemble le coté linéaire qu’on peut craindre des qu’on a affaire à un album se réclamant de ce style entendu et re entendu moult fois. Chaque titre amene son petit quelque chose : un gros refrain qui flingue (« Ride The Rainbow », « Fighting ») une intro tonitruante et un rythme élevé (« waves of war ») ou alors acoustique pour aboutir sur un rythmique bien lourde (« Dying in the rain » et ses jolis petits arpèges) ou alors le petit break acoustique de « Fire of Hades ». En fait la qualité de cet album réside dans le fait que contrairement à certains, ils n’essaient pas d’en « faire trop », et restent vraiment dans ce qu’ils savent faire : Nico ne tente pas les montées débiles dans les aigus pour montrer qu’il sait faire, la paire de guitaristes ne se lance pas dans des démonstrations « malmsteenesques » ni ne multiplie les breaks qui rendraient l’écoute plus laborieuse. Chained est donc un très bon album, qui nous permet de patienter avant la sortie tant attendue du chef de file, le sus nommé Hammerfall. Ceux ci sont prévenus : avec cette sortie pleine de simplicité et d’efficacité, la barre est haute, et on peut dire maintenant que la bagarre pour la suprématie du style est engagée. BY: Fredo

Crystal Eyes launch their sixth album “Chained”. Following the steps and styles of Iron Ìaiden, Judas Priest, Helloween and many other metal gods, Crystal Eyes successfully maintain the classic heavy metal sounds. Originally formed in 1992 but their music career officially started in 1999 with their debut album “World of Black and Silver”. They have an impressive band resume they continue stronger than ever. With talented vocalist Nico Adamsen, who had joined the band by 2006, and Fredrik Nordstrom on the mixing board, Crystal Eyes are on a steady road. Solid song writing that easily can be identifies with great classic heavy metal. Nothing unexpected or any distortions of modern metal. There are riffs that bring to mind the roots of heavy metal and the bands that made it grow as a genre. The album consists of nine tracks and with titles like ‘The Fire of Hades”, “Waves of War”, and “Shadow Rider”, I must say I was intrigued. Upon listening to the songs I understood what they are all about and I really enjoyed it. The first song, “Ride the Rainbow” has elements of Helloween vs. Iron Maiden. It the guitar riffs that clearly state their influences. “Fires of Hades” and Shadow Rider” are the songs that stand out. A little bit of Black Sabbath comes to mind amongst many other audible influences, and Running Wild fans check out “Waves of War”! If you don’t like bands that create music inspired by the past and that stick to those musical recipes, than you might want to check out something else. On the other hand, you will be missing out on other good characteristics of the album. For those who don’t mind hearing music that has “already been done”…Then blast this album! Vo¾akedy dávno platilo, že ak bol v telke Silvester, nejaká estráda, èi významná súaž, nesmel chýba Karel Gott. Dnes zdá sa, že platí, že nesmie chýba CRYSTAL EYES zhruba 1x za rok. Inak by asi hrozil úpadok heavy metalu èi èo, no ja som nakoniec rád, že táto kapela sa neondí a vydáva dosky èasto, nie ako mnohí iní, ktorí tak robia raz za 3 a viac rokov. A ešte tu nemáme ani štýlové kotrmelce a špekulácie s trendami. Odkedy spomalili (3. album), drhnú si ten svoj hevík sa slávni a pózerskejší HAMMERFALL (a najmä dobre živení u megafirmy). CRYSTAL EYES sú rovnaká stálica ako HAMMERFALL v rámci žánru, aj keï sú menej známi a ich CD ažšie dostupnejšie (no nie nedostupné). Kto chce heavy na istotu, po CRYSTAL EYES by mal siahnú. Zdá sa, že ide o ïalšiu kapelu na scéne, ktorá vie, èo chce hra a ráèi to tak aj robi! V dnešnej dobe to už nie je tak „in“ ako v 80-tých rokoch, že ak je kapela heavymetalová, tak ho ráèi hra naveky (MOTORHEAD, IRON MAIDEN, SAXON, ACCEPT a pod.). Ak poznáte tvorbu CRYSTAL EYES, tak viete o èom je novinka a môžete sa po òu vybra...je dokonca i lepšia ako minulý album „Dead city dreaming“. No ja najradšej prvé dva a urèite nie kvôli spevu... Poïme ale na to poriadne: Švédi CRYSTAL EYES hrajú tradièný heavy metal riadne nemeckého (ale aj trochu švédskeho) typu a hrajú ho ortodoxne, poctivo a srdcom. Teda na novinke urèite. Nesie sa prevažne v strednom tempe, máme obèas zborové refrény, v každej songe gitarové sólo, na CD sa nájde aj ten slaïáèik... Muzika je celkom hutná, kapela hrá „živo“ a nepchá sa inam ako do heavy metalu (ani èoby milóny platili, ako sa zdá). Je to otrepaná pesnièka? Asi ako posledné tri dosky HAMMERFALL, presne tak! CRYSTAL EYES majú vlastný ksicht na scéne, aj zvuk a pod¾a toho ich možno spozna. Bývalý spevák (s originálnym, ale divným hlasom) spieva dokonca poslednú pieseò (na moje poèudovanie to je slaïák). Nová doska je živšia, hutnejšia a nápaditejšia ako posledné dve. Dobrý heavy metal a basta (vzaté celosvetovo)! Ale je tu jedna pre mòa nepochopite¾ná a záhadná vec: preèo kapela nezahrala ani jednu rýchlu pieseò??? Predsa aj v heavy metale máme vypa¾ováky a aj kapely typu ACCEPT dávali zo dve rýchle na album. CRYSTAL EYES by to vôbec, ale naozaj vôbec neuškodilo, práve naopak!!! To mi chýba na „Chained“ ako so¾ v polievke! Neviem èo sa stalo, rýchlych songov jednoducho niet. Zato jenda pieseò je na RUNNING WILD a jedna klišovitý US heavy, no ale rýchla ani za svet! Škoda, škoda, mohlo to by možno i lepšie ako „Vengeance descending“, keby na to trochu dupli. Lenže nie je...našastie to nie je „suchý“, èi priemerný zbytoèný hevík v pravom zmysle slova. „Chained“ je urèite lepší ako minulá doska, vyrovná sa v pohode aj „Confessions of the maker“. Jasné, že „In silence they march“ stále vládne a keby nieèo podobného zahrali so súèasným spevákom, to by bolo! Lenže sa im možno nechce ako NOSTRADAMEUSu...takže som rád, že je to aspoò takéto. Auf das neue Scheibchen der Schweden Crystal Eyes habe ich mich wirklich gefreut, denn als Kind der 80er muss man diese Band einfach mögen. Vor fast exakt 2 Jahren konnten mich die Traditionalisten mit ihrem 4. Album größtenteils überzeugen und selbstredend frönen die Burschen auch auf ihrem aktuellen Output der goldenen Ära und all ihrer positiven Begleiterscheinungen. Ihr wollt Innovation, Melancholie und subtile Texte? Völlig falscher Artikel, bitte wegklicken! Ihr mögt Running Wild, Accept, (alte) Blind Guardian, Ihr habt 'ne Kutte und Ihr könnt gleichzeitig bangen, Bier trinken und dabei lauthals brüllen? Bitte weiterlesen! Ja, natürlich - Crystal Eyes sind das personifizierte Klischee, der Alptraum aller Nickelbrillen - Träger mit Dream Theater Shirt. Doch wie schrieb unlängst der „Stern“ in einem Artikel über AC/DC: „...auch die Leute, die ihre Bierflaschen mit der Nase öffnen und ihre Frauen „Tussi“ nennen, müssen ja irgendwas hören“. Richtig! Crystal Eyes versetzen uns wieder in eine Zeit, als Metal noch Rebellion war: Lederjacke, Nietenarmband, Pulle Bier in der Flosse und immer ein „Ohhhooohhhooo“ auf den Lippen. „Chained“ lässt uns alte Säcke wehmütig an diese Epoche zurückdenken und schafft es gleichzeitig, den jungen Kuttenträgern die Magie von damals näher zu bringen. Ein minimales Ärgernis regt sich bei mir nur aufgrund der Tatsache, dass Retro - Bands wie Airbourne oder Bullet, die richtig frech und unoriginell klauen, überall abgefeiert werden, während Crystal Eyes zumindest in Deutschland relativ unbekannt sind. OK – klauen können die 4 Schweden mit dem dänischen Sänger auch ganz gut. Der Abschlusstrack „Guardian“ bspw. heisst nicht umsonst so, da liegt Krefeld schon mal in Skandinavien. Doch Crystal Eyes gehen bei ihren Jagdzügen in fremden Gefilden niemals zu penetrant vor. Sie vermischen halt eine ganze Menge Zutaten alter Helden zu einem Cocktail der zwar bekannt, aber nicht unangenehm abgestanden schmeckt. Ein ganz großes Plus hierbei ist die tolle Stimme von Nico Adamsen. Der Mann singt richtig gut und eigentlich Metal - untypisch. Der Däne kann es auch hoch und kraftvoll, und klingt in Ansätzen wie Sebastian Bach, doch der Hauptanteil seiner Performance ist von einem sehr klaren und sauberen Gesang geprägt. Ein bisschen wie Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian) in kräftig. Das Doppel - Plus ist jedoch zweifellos die famose Umsetzung der Songs. Die Band klingt niemals übermotiviert. Man reiht zwar Hymne an Hymne, überreizt sich aber nicht an endlosen Wiederholungen. Bestes Beispiel ist der Opener „Ride the Rainbow“, den man bereits beim 2. Refrain unweigerlich mitbrüllt, der Accept Riffs mit ordentlich Schlachten – Epos vermengt, durch zahlreiche Tempowechsel niemals langweilig wird und sofort die markanten doppelten Leads präsentiert. Wie auch beim Vorgängeralbum gibt es auf „Chained“ eine klare Konstante und keinen einzigen Ausfall zu vermelden. Allenfalls lassen sich Mini Höhepunkte nennen, wie der mächtige Chorus von „The Fire Of Hades“, die Running Wild Hommage in „Waves Of War“ oder die coole Sinner Schlagseite beim flotten „Fighting“. Die Produktion ist wieder mal überaus gelungen: glasklar, wunderbar ausbalanciert und druckvoll ohne Ende. Gewohnt gute Arbeit von Fredrik Nordström. Crystal Eyes haben sich keinen Deut verändert, was auch gut ist. Einen Meilenstein haben die Jungs freilich nicht kreiert, doch wir sollten dankbar sein, dass es solche Bands gibt. Der Unterschied zwischen Hammerfall und Crystal Eyes? Crystal Eyes haben den besseren Sänger und klingen noch mehr nach Accept. BY: maddin

Uno de los grupos más vilipendiados del power metal melódico europeo, no italiano, son CRYSTAL EYES, grupo que surgió, como muchos otros, en la avenida de finales de los noventa, cuando hacer power melódico estaba tan bien visto como lo estuvo el movimiento de Seatle (Grunge) unos años antes. Se ve que estos suecos no calaron tan hondo, nunca disfrutaron del éxito de otras formaciones y encima no contaron con los mejores medios. Parece que estaban destinados al ostracismo musical, meta a la cual llegaron la mitad de las formaciones coetáneas; pues no, ellos no se rindieron, tuvieron incluso un conato de éxito cuando anunciaron que Daniel Heiman (el genial excantante de los defenestrados LOST HORIZON) iba a cantar en su cuarto trabajo “Confessions of the maker”, pero se quedó ahí, un intento. Era un disco muy mediocre con un cantante desaprovechadísimo. Aun así siguieron trabajando y no se rindieron pese al rechazo de Heiman a pertenecer a la banda. Casualidades de la vida, gracias a ese hecho ficharon al veterano Søren Nico Adamsen, lo mejor que pudieron hacer puesto que para mí es el verdadero descubrimiento y puede que sea el factor que los haga sobresalir de ahora en adelante. Con él realizaron su quinto álbum de estudio, el cual pasó bastante desapercibido y por fin, llegando a nuestros días, Metal Heaven se fijó en ellos y les han vuelto a dar otra oportunidad llamada “Chained”, en el cual siguen marcando la línea iniciada en el anterior álbum pero aún más acentuada, olvidándose mucho más del power metal que los apadrinó y centrándose en hacer un buen disco de metal melódico. El resultado final me deja insatisfecho pero de la mejor manera posible, es decir, oyendo este disco siento que esta banda podría hacerlo bastante mejor, porque a veces saben componer francamente bien pero se ve que las ideas buenas tienen una autonomía de 25 minutos. El resto es medio relleno no muy aburrido pero que no aporta nada nuevo. Por el contrario han tenido la gran idea de convertirlo en un compendio de variedad que lo hace atractivo a muchos públicos, en especial los seguidores del power melódico tradicional, heavy metal melódico y heavy metal clásico ochentero. Algunos de los temas más destacables de “Chained” por ejemplo son “Ride the rainbow”, en la cual rememora su propio pasado musical, dejando entrever la felicidad que tenían en sus años mozos. Otra destacada es “Waves of war”, la mejor del compacto con mucha diferencia, sus melodías made in “RUNNING WILD se acoplan a la estupenda voz de Søren. “Dying in the rain" es una gran muestra de metal melódico a medio tiempo con guiños que, incluso, me han evocado a BLACK SABBATH (puntualmente). Los ochenta quedan revividos con la agradable y marchosa “Fighting” toda una sorpresa no esperable por parte de estos suecos. Y por último apuntaros la balada “Guardian”, con la cual quieren recrear la grandiosa “The bard’s song” de BLIND GUARDIAN, resultando un tema muy agradable pero menos memorable. No les puedo echar en cara que lo intenten, la canción del bardo ha hecho escuela y hasta los teutones quisieron emularla en su último disco pero se ve que ya no están tan inspirados. Es un buen disco, cortito y ligero al que le falta más consistencia y más canciones rápidas con las que siempre quedarán identificados. Quizás le sobre algunas del final donde no se aplicaron al 100 %, aún así me atrevo a decir que es de lo más interesante de su discografía. BY: Almighty

Aber hallo! Ein absolut amtliches Stück Schwedenstahl servieren uns hier CRYSTAL EYES mit ihrem neuen Longplayer "Chained", und ganz im Stile von Genregrößen wie HAMMERFALL, BRAINSTORM und mit einer Prise FREEDOM CALL geht der Fünfer zu Werke, und schmettert uns klangvolle Titel wie "Ride The Rainbow", "The Fire Of Hades" oder "Shadow Rider" entgegen. Und dabei präsentieren sich die Herren in mehr als nur formidabler Art und Weise! Eine absolut starke Produktion, kombiniert mit ambitioniertem Songwriting, das zu gefallen weiß, und dazu noch eine Vielzahl an eingängigen Hooks, die mal an den Metal der 90iger, manchmal mehr an Hard Rock der 80iger erinnern - Herz aus Stahl, was willst du mehr! Zwar finden sich auf dem Album "nur" neun Songs - diese habens dafür aber eigentlich alle in sich und wissen zu überzeugen. So kann etwa das fröhliche, mit FREEDOM CALL-Anleihen daherkommende "Ride The Rainbow" als Opener punkten, "The Devil Inside" besticht dagegen dann mehr durch rockige Riffs und satten Groove, das mit voller Absicht sehr in Richtung RUNNING WILD getrimmte "Waves Of War" (bei dem schon im Intro über "Jolly Roger" gesungen wird ;) ) weist dann eine deutliche Rock'n'Rolf-Schlagseite auf; und bei "Dying In The Rain" wird dann die obligatorische Powerballade aufgefahren. Alles in allem also eine Runde Sache - da vergibt man auch den etwas seltsamen Songtitel "Lonely Ball of Fate" (Hm, geht's da um die Hodenquetschung eines Wahrsagers?). Unterm Strich bleibt dabei ein durchaus abwechslungsreiches, starkes Melodic Metal Album, das durch solide Handwerkskunst und sehr gute Gesangsleistungen besticht und für alle Freunde des klassischen "Wahren Stahls" definitiv eine Überlegung wert sein sollte! The Power Of Metal 87/100
Their debut 'World of Black and Silver" was released in 1999, and they have since the debut launched records on a regularly basis. This is their sixth release, so we can't call them lazy. Last album 'Dead City Dreaming' was a huge step forward for the band. The songs became catchier and perhaps the biggest change was: Danish singer Soren Nico Adamsen joined the band. Fortunately Nico is still singing on this album, the man has a perfect voice for this kind of metal, he places the songs on a higher level. I assume that Mikael Dahl (guitar) wrote most of the songs again. He has excellent writing skills; I haven't listened to many songs lately as good as "Waves of War", most of the songs, but this one in particular has excellent and catchy guitar riffs, combined with lots of melody and bombast, and the melody in the song is very addictive. Of course their main influences: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Helloween put a stamp on the music, but what band in this genre can say differently? With this album Crystal Eyes achieves to get almost alongside them. A lot of genre rivals would kill for such a vocalist and gets jealous over such catchy melodic song writing capacity. Sist jeg hørte noe av disse svenskene var det med ex-Lost Horizon vokalist Daniel Heiman bak mikrofonen, men han har forsvunnet ut av bandet siden sist og inn har kommet en danske ved navn Nico Adamsen. Nykommeren gjør en glimrende jobb bare for å ha det nevnt først som sist. Crystal Eyes fremfører relativt tradisjonell heavy metal av det lystige og allsangvennlige slaget, og sammenligningen med Hammerfall kommer man ikke utenom. Begrepet innovasjon står med andre ord ikke i høysetet hos denne gjengen, men til gjengjeld vet de hvordan man snekrer gode låter og dermed kommer bandet fra det med æren i behold og vel så det. Hør bare på en låt som ’The fire of hades’ og du skjønner hva jeg mener. Liker du catchy og snill heavy metal med fokus på gode melodier, ja da kan du trygt føre opp ’Chained’ på innkjøpslista. Inmitten all der schwedischen Power Metal-Bands sind Crystal Eyes wahrscheinlich der ewige Geheimtip. Würden sie halt nur mal etwas mehr hierzulande spielen, dann ginge das auch mit der Popularität etwas voran. Denn an den Songs kann es nicht liegen, daß die Band hierzulande kaum einer kennt; auch auf dem mittlerweile sechsten Album hat Mikael Dahl mal wieder eine Art Handbuch des Power Metals versammelt. Hart, überwiegend schnell, melodiös und mit diesen genialen Melodien versehen, wie sie wirklich wenige sonst schreiben können. Ob „Waves of war“, „Dying in the rain“, „Shadow rider“…ach, eigentlich kann man keinen der neun Songs hervorheben. Wie immer gibt es aus dem Hause Crystal Eyes nur erstklassiges Liedgut zu hören, das 90% der Konkurrenz locker aussticht. Noch dazu bietet „Chained“ eine gesangliche, instrumentale und produktionstechnische Leistung, die keine Wünsche offenläßt. Es wäre schön, wenn mal ein paar mehr Leute mitbekommen würden, welches Juwel hier vor sich hingammelt. Jeder Power Metal-Fan wird beim Genuß dieses Albums vor Verzücken durchdrehe, soviel ist klar. Sesto album per gli svedesi Crystal Eyes, band che sin dagli esordi è rimasta fedele a un power di matrice teutonica sulla scia di gruppi come Helloween e Gamma Ray, tanto per citare i maestri, soprattutto riguardo le melodie happy. La musica di questa band non è di certo pretenziosa, sono operai del metallo, e ciò che più desiderano è suonare power/heavy metal con l’unico scopo di farci scuotere la testa per un po’ di minuti. In tal senso questo Chained funziona a meraviglia, grazie a brani che fanno dell’energia e delle melodie di facile presa i loro punti di forza. Rispetto al passato comunque si nota una certa tendenza a rallentare i ritmi, spostandosi di più su mid tempos, cercando in un qualche modo di conferire maggiore pathos ai brani. Ciò che infatti risalta maggiormente è uno spirito heay/hard rock anni ’80 per tutta la durata del disco. La band è compatta, non male è la produzione; inoltre rispetto al passato i nostri riescono anche a variare leggermente la loro proposta, passando da brani dal sapore hard rock, al classico power teutonico. Certo, non inventano niente, ma vi posso garantire che queste canzoni hanno una certa anima, riescono a farsi apprezzare, grazie soprattutto ai continui cori da stadio che ti si stampano immediatamente nella mente. L’iniziale, Ride The Storm è una canzone in tutto e per tutto power, con melodie happy a sorreggere il tutto, The Fire Of Hades e The Devil Inside, ci mostra i Crystal Eyes molto più inclini a proporre brani rocciosi e decisamente heavy metal (il primo) e brani hard rock. Soprattutto quest’ultimo si fa apprezzare per la sua freschezza, il coinvolgimento che sa trasmettere, grazie a un chorus azzeccato. Si ritorna su lidi classicamente power con Waves Of War, veloce e tirata in piena tradizione tedesca, e sicuramente uno dei brani migliori dell’album. Dying The Rain torna a richiamare i Judas Priest come stile, anche se questo non basta per risollevare le sorti di un brano che non riesce a decollare. Decisamente più ispirato è Fighting, un brano heavy metal veloce e tirato, con un chorus caratterizzato da cori e contro cori trascinante e che spinge i nostri su lidi hard rock. Sulle coordinate più massicce si mantiene Shadow Rider, che si fa apprezzare per il grande lavoro delle chitarre. In sostanza è un album che si fa apprezzare, i brani funzionano, scorrono bene a parte un paio di cadute. Il songwriting in possesso dei nostri è consolidato ormai da anni, ciò che manca al gruppo è la voglia di osare di più, ma forse va bene così anche a loro. Con questo Chained, gli svedesi ancora una volta dimostrano che a loro interessa semplicemente suonare metal, in modo sincero, senza pretese, ma con il cuore in mano! Hammerfall, dubbele bassdrum, twingitaar-soli, hoog uithalende zanger, Zweden, stereotype songtitels, power metal, dozijn, dertien, wasco en boerenjongens. Het zijn sleutelwoorden die niet mogen ontbreken bij het recenseren van Crystal Eyes' vijfde plaat. Nu ja, misschien die laatste twee niet. Het liefst zou ik op deze plek eigenlijk schrijven dat Chained gewoon hondsberoerde teringmeuk is waar de honden geen brood van lusten, maar dat zou niet eerlijk zijn. De jongens doen hun best en het kunstje wat ze doen, beheersen ze ook goed. Negen songs lang is het power metal for beginners wat de klok slaat. Voor hen die net aan het genre beginnen is Chained dan ook helemaal geen beroerde plaat, maar voor de oude rotten... Het is een beetje zoals in de bijbel, dat God tegen Abraham zei dat hij de sterren moest tellen om een idee te krijgen van hoe groot zijn nageslacht werd. Het aantal power metalbands is inmiddels twee keer zo groot als dat van dat nageslacht en inmiddels is het gewoon niet leuk meer. Teveel bands in het genre klinken exact hetzelfde, de originaliteit is mijlenver te zoeken en de productie is voor al die platen eveneens eender. Een mens wordt er niet vrolijker van. Moraal van het verhaal: geen slechte plaat, geen slechte band, maar echt (en dan ook écht) een product voor de doorgewinterde verzamelaar. U bent gewaarschuwd. BY: Ralph Plug
